COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before Countless British soldiers died in the trenches of Belgium in World War I, they managed to pass on to the Belgians a taste for wonderful British ale. Shortly afterward, in the 1920s, the Belgians began making pale ale themselves-with the intriguing addition of a spicy, fruity, almost perfumed aroma that comes not from spices but a special Belgian yeast. This one from the tiny one man brewery Achilles is a classic Belgian Pale Ale, for everyday drinking.

Aroma is bread, yeast, grains and spices. The flavor is yeast, spice and grains, along with a bready maltiness. Among Belgian Ales, this was one of the few that could be considered a session ale, relatively easy drinking throughout.

Appearance: orange marmalade, with a huge, actively bubbly lightly tan head that slowly recedes to a collar and leaves minimal lacing. Aroma: salted caramel and sweet malts, honey and light yeast, white grapes and lemon, a little ocean scent back there somewhere. Taste: citrus (mainly lemon) and some lightly bittering hops up front, then some sweet malted grains and a bit of funky yeast; caramel apple notes as it warms, with a pleasant sweet tarts candy note. Finish: sweet and yeasty, just a bit metallic, with some lightly bitter hops to pave the way for the next mouthful. Notes: Very nice. Lots and lots of flavors going on, especially as it warmed. Complex, yet very drinkable, with a nice level of carbonation and perfect light hoppiness to keep me coming back. Had it with a plate of crackers, Guinness cheddar and Chimay cheese and it was perfect. Drank the whole dang thing (750ml).

Belgian yeast and a little sourness in the aroma. Sweet taste with some fruit and spice. Watery mouthfeel, and very easy to drink.

Starts with sweet apple and spice. Dry noble hops, phenols, and melon come next with herbal and mineral notes in the end. Somewhat dry in the finish.

Bottle [330ml]. Pours a cloudy deep amber with lots of tiny floaties and a large lasting fluffy white head. Aroma is fruity and biscuity foremost followed by yeast, sweet malt, honey and light spices. Fruity flavour along with yeast, sweet malt, light spices and light hops. Alcohol well hidden. Average bodied. I didn’t get a lot of the Belgian yeast or hops, which to me is what makes a Belgian Pale Ale, but despite that I still enjoyed drinking this.

Bottle at the Bayou. Pours a mostly clear amber color with a medium white head. The aroma is caramel, toasted malts, light fruity hops. The flavor is interesting and I think it does the concept of Belgian Pale Ale some justice; light spices, some fruit perhaps pears and apples, light sweet Belgian malts, very light bitterness in the finish. A nice brew. Of course, Craig is right the Bayou charged 22$ for this which is about double it should be.

750ml bottle shared with Doug at The Bayou
Appearance: Clear amber with a medium sized white head and some lacing
Aroma: Honey and sweet malts
Taste: Sweet malts, sweet caramel and spices
Ok, very sweet. Not worth the steep price. Glad this was shared with Doug and others.

From the Rare Beer Club. Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a bright orange-caramel color with an enormous foamy orange-beige head that lingered forever and produced good lacing. The aroma was yeasty, sweetish, tart and had faint vague fruits. The flavor was dryish, tart and bitter with a bit of vague citrus and a faint peppery and musty undertone. The finish was medium length dry, tart and citric. Moderately full bodied. Mediocre.

Bottle… Cloudy amber ale with a small, creamy, white head. The bouquet offers herbal hops and restrained toffee malt. Medium to full-bodied with middle-of-the-road carbonation. Balanced well. Toffee sweetness is layered between hop bitterness and phenolic, wild grain spiciness. The bittersweet finish is herbal and a touch medicinal.

Pour is murky deep orangey amber with a thin tight bubbled skin of a white head...smell is indeed fruity and perfumey with some light and faint biscuity sweet notes too...hints of must...taste is fairly sweet with stale bread flavors and some faintly spiced clove and coriander and black pepper...light coppery flavored bitterness in the finish...quick and a tad thin...this is really close to being quite delicious...I’d love to try a brett version.
