maltdog (432), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 10, 2008 12oz bottle with redhead trapeze chick on the label. Brassy straw color, nearly opaque with carbonation run amok. A solid ivory lather begins at an inch plus, and soon doubles in depth, suggesting a good percentage of flaked barley or wheat in the grist. Light toasty, citric, wheaty nose, not very exciting. The flavor is similar... weak toast with puffed wheat ceral and green appleskin. A fleeting tart/citric finish leads to a metallic aftertaste and an extremely long-lasting, moderately bitter (in respect to the beer’s wimpyness) ashtray bitterness. Creamy foam beefs up an otherwise light, sharp palate. Overall pretty bland; reminds me of Boddingtons, but hopped with Chinook I’m guessing. Not good... I expected so much more from North Coast. And 89 points from the BTI makes me wonder what makes them qualified to judge/rate anything other than mass-market pale lager.
Sparky27 (600), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Oct 6, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark gold with minimal head and zero lacing. Nose is bread, malt and grass. Taste is caramel matt, honey and a mild citrus hop finish. Light mouth feel. Not very good. the_federalist (199), Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA Oct 2, 2008 Pours golden copper. Mild hop aroma. Flavor is malty and sweet. Low bitterness. Not particularly complex, but not offensive in any way. lumpsowers (87), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA Sep 18, 2008 Citrus and yeast aroma, hops predominate, sweet fruity finish, almost wine like aftertaste. Not bad, more strange than good. jhliesen (358), West Melbourne, Florida, USA Sep 7, 2008 Bottle--Well, I wished I knew about the reviews ahead of drinking the beer. I was really expecting something special, but ended up being just mediocre. The color was amber with a short lasting head. Some hop aroma started the beer and the taste was of mild hops. mistersinalin (278), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Sep 5, 2008 North Coast makes Rasputin and this? I am surprised. At this price point I would expect a better beer. Very little aroma and not much hop character for a pale ale - sort of blah.
