A deep malt and hoppy aroma with liquorice throughout. Roast malt, friut and hops also carry through this full bodied stout.

Aroma: toasted and roasted malts, hints of salty smoke. Appearance: dark brown, clear, no head. Taste: light sweet. Palate: smoky flavours, roasted malts, maybe some black coffee, bitters getting medium intense, long-finish. Overall: decent, palate could do with more complexity. Pint at the London Drinker Beer & Cider Festival.

Bottle from Rythm & Booze, Mapplewell, Barnsley. Black with a dark red speckle of light showing through.Light tan head that sticks around. Quite thin and fizzy. The nose is coffee, biscuits, dark malts, blackberries and dark fruits, vanilla, oak. Taste is surprisingly sweet at the start finishing bitter with a rum spirit aftertaste. Vanilla is noticeable along with smoke, charcoal and roasted malt. Coffee and dark fruits are lost. Reminds me of Innis & Gunn Rum Cask, just a darker "stouty" version. On my doorstep this is a good reliable stout, however there are others that are better and are as accessible and readily available.

kwik-lime (1429) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 6, 2013
Decent balance, some smoke, toffee, coffee and chocolate. Smooth mouthful, drinkable, though hardly complex or strong enough to really earn the imperial moniker.

Cask. Black, small bubbly light brown head. Thick off-white lacing. Smell - chocolate crayon. Body - light but not foamy. Taste - smokey with a touch of toffee. Wouldn’t call this an imperial stout at all - can drink it by the pint. Decent.

Nocturne (970) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - OCT 19, 2013
Cask at JDW. Dark ruby with a thin, patchy head. Heavy, chewy mouthfeel with molasses, treacle and toffee notes dominating the taste. Something vaguely fruity like red grape too. Lots of good stuff going on but drinkability isn’t high.

Garrold (2152) - Sheffield, South Yorkshire, ENGLAND - OCT 11, 2013
Bottle from Beeches of Walkley, Sheffield. Deep, reddy brown. Thick, creamy, beige head. Good looker. Aroma is dark, unsweetened fruit. Roasted coffee beans, some licorice, some dark chocolate. Taste is roast bitterness. Hoppy, dry finish. Punches well above its weight.

Pitch Black with light Brown foam head, lacing. Aroma is strong bitter coffee, taste is not too bitter at the start, but turning better over time. (Barnsley 201310) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cask at The Sportsman, Huddersfield, September 2013. Black with light tan head. Straight to the point wooden aroma, faint ash, too. Dry, bitter, ash-like taste, full-bodied, smooth, dried ash finish. By-the-book.

Gravity tap at Northwich Beer Festival 2013. Tasted like out of date coca cola and gone off coffee, disgusting a gusher

Medium beige head. Nearly opaque black body goes deep dark brown at edges. Earthy cocoa aroma with prunes notes. Dry-sweet roasty earthy caramel taste with burned notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish earthy floral herbal aftertaste with salty roasty notes. It’s ok, but low on flavor and just not that good. (0.5l bottle, from House of Trembling Madness, York.)
