Cask at GBBF 2011. It pours opaque black, with a thin bubbly beige head. The nose is soy sauce, sweet caramel, roasted malt and liquorice. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, coffee, dark cherry, bitter chocolate, wood, astringency and burnt malt, with a bitter-dry finish. Low carbonation and disappointingly thin. Ok.

Chelmsford Beer Festival. Opaque dark brown beer, tiny suddy tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry. Slightly bitter dark malt with mild roast. Trace of coffee. Bubblegum sweetness in the undertone! Finishes dry with some orangey hop coming through and quite a bit of hop bitterness. Bitter aftertaste. A robust stout that I enjoyed but it has a few sharp edges.

Cask at GBBF, Day 1. Pours brown-black with a light, bubbly tan head. Lactic cocoa nose, mild roast. Sweet flavor with dry roastiness, mocha, some dark fruit. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Sweet finish, nice roasted malts and burnt brown sugar. Good beer.

Bottled. Very deep brown colour, close to black, with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is malts, roasted notes, raisins, coffee and some mild notes of liquorice. Flavour is strong on the malty side and also has roasted notes and quite a bunch of bready and ryebready notes in it. As it warms up coffee, liquorice, some raisins, dark fruits as well as some mild sappy notes come through. Very wellbalanced and bigtime coffeeish aftertaste.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2013 Cask at the Magpie & Crown, pours black with a coarse off-white head, clean smoke and a little dried dark fruit on the nose, then a chewy yet dry body with liquorice and black treacle on the palate. A little pine and citrus emerge in an astringent and sharply bitter aftertaste. Very tasty!

Hand pulled at the Wellington, Birmingham. Jet black, thin cream fluff. Rich oil choc smell. Initially tastes very strong, but then feels watery in the mouth. Actually quite easy drinking. Peppery dry roast. Flavour doesn’t really hold and fades down the throat. Pretty good, but probably suffers in comparison with other impy stouts, but then again it is 6%, not 11%.

Tasting at the 18th Mondial de la bière, June 8, 2011. Cola brown, thin head. Aroma of coffee a little chocolaty, hints of dry herbs. Taste of malty herbs and coffee, nutty notes, bitter herbs and coffee. So so imperial stout!
