(Cask at Market Porter, Southwark, London, 1 Dec 2007) Brownish black colour with frothy pale brown head. Roasted , malty nose with loads of coffee and dark chocolate. Roasted, malty taste with notes of dark fruit, coffee, cocoa and a long, roasted, bitter finish. Powerful stout, full body, balanced sweetness. Excellent beer.

Dec 2009: Brown 500ml, bottle conditioned, poured into a vase shaped pint glass. You aren’t going to get a much darker beer than this, a true stout, Imperial or otherwise, jet black colour, with a tight tan coloured head on top. Liquorice hits your nose straight away, dark chocolate malts can also be found if you sniff well enough. Malty, hoppy and all mixed in with the overiding flavour of liquorice roots. Chocolate and coffee feel in there too. Full bodied and almost creamy and rich, but no quiet that opulent or delicious in its intensity. Easy to drink and a nice nightcap sort of drink, wouldn’t want a gallon, but a pint was just Dandy.

Bottle. Deep dark brown with a very slight ruby haze. Rich tan head. Smells of milk chocolate, caramel, coffee and a slight whisky. Licorice, malt chocolate, some plum, herby spiciness, sherbert in the mouth. The finish is quite heady with a slight alcohol burn and a bitter kick. Dry, lastin, and a hint of banana.

McNeillR (76) - SCOTLAND - MAR 20, 2012
Fairly lax stout notes, a respectable off white head. Loose cheap toffee initial palate punctuated by crisp bag crumbs of spices, with a clean stout linger. Nothing terribly standout, apart from the name. (Cask, Cloisters, Edinburgh)

This is a really nice dark stout with a nutty nose and taste and an after taste that lingers, I would get this again and again ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cask. Black with some thin brown foam. Dark chocolate nose with some heavy roasted character. More dark chocolate and cherry flavors. On the easy drinking body with a dry finish.

On cask at The Congress, Longton. Pours black with a thick tan head. I like stout but I find imperial stouts a bit too rich for me. This is typical of the type, nice but I’m glad I only had a half! I find the alcohol overpowers the chocolate and spices.

Pours a thick, opaque black with fluffy tan head. Strong aroma of roast barley and a hint of coffee. In the mouth its thick and velvety with dark chocolate, bitter roast coffee and an astringent hop finish.
