Cask. Very deep brown, close to black, colour, with a small beigeish-brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some ashes, mild vanilla as well as wooden notes. Flavour is ashes, liquorice, roasted malts, some vanilla as well as mild dark berries and bitterness in the finish. Very pleasant porter for being only 4.4 % abv!

On cask at Cloisters. Pours a very dark red colour with a thin tan head. Aroma of caramel, coffee and chocolate. Similar flavours with a long roasted malt and burnt toast linger. Mild carbonation and CO2 prickle. OK.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tasted this at the Troon Beer Festival in October 2010. Handpull dispense. Dull black in colour with an open bubbled tan head. Roast malt in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and no lacing. Dark malts give a plethora of flavours with black treacle, chicory, liquorice and black cherries evident. A vague hint of bitter hop resins comes through in the aftertaste but fades away to leave a moreish dry finish. An ok session porter .

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask, Queen’s Head, Chelmsford
Appearance is opaque and jet black. Frothy white lacing, aroma is treacle, black currant,. Taste is syrup, toffee, treacle, wood, blackcurrent, leather, licorish, roasted malts, hearwaming but moderate on the burn. Really nice and feels much more potent than the abv. Great porter especially by a warm fire on a winter’s evening.
