A full bodied victorian style porter with hints of liquorice. The initial bitterness gives way to a smooth, mellow finish.

cask @ Battersea Beer Festival 2008. Malt, alcohol, some hops in the nose. Pours dark brown beer. taste is abidingly of alcohol, hops and malt. Quite strong in fact leaving a dry finish. Not as nice as I had hoped.

Cask at Kelham Island Tavern. Pours very dark brown/black with a thin tan rim. Aroma is chocolate, roasty, toasty malt, and coffee. Flavors are roasted malt, a touch of burnt toast, liquorice, coffee, touch of vanilla, maybe a tiny bit of smoke.

Cask, Volunteers Arms, GBBF 07. Almost black, thin tan head. Nose is chocolate, hint of milk, gentle roasted. Quite inoffensive roasted mouth with a sour watery aftertaste. Quite quenching, slightly sweet.

A Mes rate: Cask at Chelmsford Beer Festival. Lovely sweet malt with some great milky coffee notes. Odd wheaty cereal flavour with a sweet yet bitter finish. Very tasty with impressive length. A glorious porter.

Gravity, Merton Beer Festival. Black with brown highlights, smallish tan layer of foam. Old lady perked coffee aroma and milk chocolate. Chocolate, smokey flavor, fairy light bodied but a good volume of flavor. Soft. Good.

Cask at Merton Summer Beer Festival 07-07-07. Poured black with very little head. This for me was the only beer that managed to challenge the Grand Union Simcoe and Bowman Quiver over the weekend and it did so very well sitting between the two in my ratings. A very convincing porter with great liquorice throughout, a touch of sourness maybe and some nice dried dark fruits thrown in for good measure. A lovely beer that tasted corking and I for one wasn’t upset at all that we were unable to get the Gorlokova from the same brewery as this was an excellent replacement.

Cask conditioned at Coventry Beer Fest ’07. Black with ruby hue, pale head. Rich heavy malty beer with a fruity sweet acidic character. Heavy on the finish with licorice and coffee . A very good beer.

cask at Barnsley beer festival: dark black beer with a tan head. Remember some licorice and coffee in the nose, with the same elements being reflected in the flavor plus the taste of burnt toast. pretty nice porter, but I’ve had better.

Half on gravity at the Ipswich Beer Festival. Very dark, almost black in colour. Small layer of foam. Coffee aroma. Well rounded roasted taste of dark chocolate, blend of coffee and malty sweetness (21.09.2006).
