A full bodied victorian style porter with hints of liquorice. The initial bitterness gives way to a smooth, mellow finish.

Cask - Planet Thanet Beer Festival ’09. Dark but clear brown colour with a diminishing but bubbly beige head. Predominant aromas of burnt notes, dark chocolate, light coffee tones and roasted malts. Coffee and roasted malts again in the flavour with some liquorice undertones. Thick and velvety mouthfeel. A hearty, well rounded porter.

Cask at Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield. Dark, almost black pour with a reddish hue. Big frothy tan head. Nutty aroma with a smooth malty liqourice taste. Little bitterness and nothing on the palate, just pure smoothness all the way. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Retro review from Spring 2012 Wetherspoons Beer festival; deep black, great mouth feel, complex roast malts, one of the better ones from JDW.

Cask @ Cloisters 270712
Dark brown, slight ruby light through edges of glass, light tan creamy head, good lacing
Aroma - roasted malt, light chocolate
Taste - roast malts, coffee, mainly bitter roast, background of bitter hops, some burnt crust, bit earthy
Palate - very soft carb, thin to medium body. Finish - lingering coffee and bitter roast malt
Overall - Over burnt bitter linger...reasonable beer...wasn’t overly impressed with this

A crisp and easy to drink porter, but certainly not a distinctive ale in character.
