Adelardus abbey beer is the youngest descendant of our beers. This dark brown beer was made for the open house days of the abbey. Adelardus was one of the most important abbots for the abbey of Trudo and the city Sint-Truiden. He built the tower and rebuilded the existing church into one of the most monumental churches of that time. The ingredients are: brewing liqour, malt, yeast, hop, candy and ‘sweet gale’. ‘Sweet gale’ is a mixture of ten spices from the region, which gives the beer his typical flavour. The alcohol content of this abbey beer is 7 % vol.alc.

Gradevolissima dubbel.

Fine pour from 330ml into Duvel. Heads up pretty well for a bit, but dies quickish. I have to say, there’s something a bit too bathroom-reminiscent about the aroma in this. I know that’s weird but it’s about all I can think of. Flavor is aggressively candi-sugared out--like I just tasted a hard candy.

Bottle. Pours brown with an off-white head. Aroma of brown sugar, sweet gale, spices, berries and caramel. Flavor is sweet and fruity with a lot of sweet gale and malt. Medium body, average carbonation.

Bottle@home(0,33l) Cream colored head. Color red-brown, with some yeast sediment. Aroma licorice, candy. Taste greasy, sweet, a little sour. Palate wavery, lingers a little. Overall too sweet

Murky brown with a burgundy tint and beige foam. The nose is surprisingly strong, sweet, hints of red fruits. The taste is pretty much like the smell but with something floral, sweet honey-like in there, vaguely reminiscent of the Proefbrouwerij’s Bloemenbier. Overall it’s the candy sugar and floral taste that dominate. Underneath that it’s all a bit watery. The aftertaste is soft and sweet without being sugary, still floral honey. Nice enough brew but lacks a bit of oomph.
