COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark Ale (5.6% ABV). Named in honor of the rare Black Rhino Del would hunt during photo safaris in Kenya. Black Rhino is a dark earthy ale with a hint of Saaz hop spice. A smooth and easy drinking ale that goes well with salty appetizers, musky cheeses, and wild game dishes.

Bottle from Choice Beverages in McKinney. Pours black with a this tan head. The aromas are malt, light milk chocolate. The mouthfeel is slightly dry and roasty with a medium body and good carbonation. Cheers!

750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of roasted malt, yeast, spice and toffee. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, roasted malt, spice, light vanilla and light yeast with a smooth lingering spiced toffee finish. Don’t know how this got entered as a Altbier my bottle said Belgian Black Ale.

Mora2000 (4040) - McKinney, Texas, USA - MAR 24, 2013
Brown color with a gigantic tan head, just like the head you get when a beer is infected. The aroma has some nuttyness and caramel as well as a ton of burning from the carbon dioxide. The flavor is not too good. There is a bit of caramel and cocoa but there is also a lot of rubber that really ruins the beer. Thin mouthfeel and extremely high, prickly carbonation.

degbert (803) - Austin, Texas, USA - MAR 12, 2013
Bottle. Pours an opaque black with a high, beige head. Nose is odd -- bacon, cedar/mothballs, and a slight roasty note. The first blast on the palate is medicinal -- it’s followed by sage, rubber, and a touch of instant coffee. Finish is long and bitter. This is weird, and to paraphrase Inigo Montoya, "I do not think that beer tastes like how you meant it to taste:.

Bottle:   Either this is infected, or overcarbonated as the bubbles in the glass are insane, the head is billowing over the glass, and the aroma is of burnt bike tire air.   Acrid roastiness on the tongue, bike tire air too.   Reminds me of really bad Sake yeast.   I don’t think I can do this one... after a few sips, either its a really piss poor example of an Alt (one that is supposed to be a Black Alt?), or its infected.   I struggle to think that the acrid bike tire air aroma and flavor was intended.   Due for a re-rate to confirm this is not what was intended.

Shared at the local homebrew Christmas party. Hazy, dark pour with a off-white head. Aroma is dry spice, off mint, and weird. Taste is more off-mint, dry, and roasted.

Black pour with a thick khaki/cream head. Nose is dried fruits, light florals, yeast, and light spice. Easy palate, smoke, fruit, yeast, bitter, and ash.

On tap. Dark brown color with good foam, aroma is chalky roast, flavor never really gets going, some brown nutshell but not much else

Tried some of a buddy’s beer while at Draught House in Austin. Pours a muddy dark brown; bottom of the keg, maybe? Not much off the aroma, just some lighter notes of toasted caramel, earth, and nuts. Flavor is pretty much the same. The main problem is the utter lack of carbonation. Light-bodied and watery. Seems like a homebrew that didn’t turn out right. If it were my buddy’s batch, I’d point to the best elements and be encouraging. But this is not worth releasing if you’re a commercial brewery.

I had high hopes for this beer. I like the brewery and I liked the beer’s name but alas this was not an enjoyable brew. First of it had so much foam we had to wait forever just to get sample. The taste is iodine, creosol and just plain nasty. Overall, yuck!
