COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Rhino is an earthy ale with hints of coffee and cocoa that pours as dark as the name we gave it. Don’t let the name fool you. This dark ale is surprisingly smooth and easy drinking. It pairs well with salty appetizers, bold musky cheeses, and wild game dishes

Bottle from Pete and Gail...Thanks! Pours a brown-amber with a thin head. Looks a little watery. Some lacing. Aroma is barnyard, slight musty brett, malts and leather. The taste is similar. It really has the barnyard funk to it. Maybe slightly infected? Malty, no sweetness, medium carbonation, light body. Overall it was OK but not sure if infected or not. Kind of odd.

Pours slightly hazy deep amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel and dried fruits. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long malty, caramel and fruity finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Batch No. 22. Bottled 10/16/2014. 6.9% ABV. Pours a thick, well retained, ivory head, with moderate lacing, over a clear, light copper (SRM 18) body......nose is toasted malts, with light cola tones, ginger ale, hints of cocoa, no hops, balance slightly to the malts......taste is light malts, almost dry, minimal fruits, finishing dry with minimal hop bitterness.....mouth feel, light of medium body, minimal alcohol, pleasant tingle from carbonation. This is a pleasant beer. It is most definitely not a Biere de Garde. It lacks the malt complexity and sweetness of the style and more nearly just a fancy Amber. The malt backbone needs a rework and perhaps a yeast change. BJCP 5/3/10/4/5

Aroma is a very light sweetness. A tiny bit tart? Pours a very dark red with a nice thick head from bottle into stemware. Thin body. Taste is likewise a gentle sweetness with some Sourish background. A little belgian yeast flavor as well. Nicely balanced but a little thin.

Darker amber, moderate head, decent lace/retention. Aroma is caramel, some bread, light yeast. Medium bodied, not a huge fan.

Cloudy brown , big off-white head. Malt and yeasty aroma with spices. Yeast and spices in malty taste . Dry bitterness in finish. High carbonated , full bodied . Interesting kind of beer de garde.

Batch #018. 750 c&c from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours very dark copper with a 3 finger foamy beige head. Aroma of roasty malt and celery. AKA Belgian yeast stuff. Med body or so. Flavor is rather peppery/spicy with chocolate and darkish malt. Kind of musty, but not like sweatsox/brett. Maybe like sucking on old dry wood. Could be some coriander. It sort of tingles all around the mouth. FInally I get it. It’s earthy. Sort of dirt aspects! Not barnyard. I’m diggin’ it.

Reddish brown pour. Smell is musty and yeasty. Taste is quite different though and is toasted bready and lightly bitter. Quite tasty actually and much better than the smell. Crisp and enjoyable.

Bottle at home. Pours lightly hazy brown with a large, frothy beige head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is toast and cookie malt, earthy hops and yeast, dates, and cellar notes. Flavor is sweet malt dominant, light earthy hops and bitterness, earthy and cellar notes with a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.

On tap at The Ginger Man, NY. It’s a clear, dark amber colored beer with a small, light beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted with prunes and caramel chiming in. It’s full-bodied and nicely carbonated, with flavors of lightly roasted malts, some prunes and dark chocolate and a faint meaty touch. Not much bitterness to talk of. Long finish. A bit on the malty side perhaps, but it’s a Biere de Garde so nothing to complain about, and it’s really fine anyway. 150624

Bottle. Clear deep amber color, fluffy beige head. Aroma is dusty, slightly nutty toffee and straw. Taste is malty caramel, light dust. Interesting.
