As Marks and Sparks Southwold Summer IPA. Clear amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is light and mildly crisp. Semi dry. Light malts carry a fair bit of caramel. Mild esters. Hops are a mildly bitter floralness. Smooth semi dry finish. Bitter linger. Too caramel dominated to be a decent IPA, more of a big ESB.

Labeled as Marks & Spencer Southwold Summer IPA. Pours clear, reddish amber. Small white head which quickly dissipates to lace. Big citrus/soapy hops aroma with a hint of barnyard. Light body, as expected from an English ale. Nice bitterness, well balanced.

M&S Bottle. Beautiful amber color with creamy head of varying sized bubbles that dissipates moderately quickly. Hoppy, citrusy aroma. Very bitter, strong taste of straw, hay, and grass, but without being astringent. For someone who doesn’t like IPAs, this one is pretty good: soft mouthfeel makes it pleasant to drink.

Bottle, M & S version. Deep golden brown, thin but sustained white head and moderate condition. Sweet and malty nose with a suggestion of chocolate and vinous fruit, some yeast notes and a low citrus hop. Bitter and chalky in the mouth with a low fruitiness, some yeast and a vague chocolate sweetness, finish is mostly yeast and hop bitterness with a brief tang of fruit

The M&S version. Clear, copper colour. Bubbly, lasting, white head. I’m not having a good beer evening, this evening. Another big, fruity, buttery job. Chewy, toffee sweet palate. Bitter finish. Hoped for more from a 6.8% Adnams beer. Oh well...

Clear and amber, thin head. Semi-sweet malt, fruity hops with a bit of caramel of toffee. Quite bitter. I would say this is very English for an American style IPA.

Looks great deep copper nice compact head. Sweetness and citrus in the aroma which follows through in the taste to balance the strong dry bitterness. These American styles can be tad bitter for me but thus has a full malty body to balance it though still very bitter. Good brew.

500ml bottle from Marks & Spencer, Ayr (as Southwold Summer IPA) - hazy amber brown, small bubbly off-white head, pine, resin, grapefruit aroma, negligible lacing, metallic, high carbonation, mild citrus, dry bitter hop finish

Big brownish head. Clear deep dark red body with light carbonation. Floral grape and gooseberry aroma with deep fruity notes. Dry-sweet fruity perfumy catty taste with resiny plasticky notes. Mid-bodied. Sharpish mouthfeel. Dryish nutty fruity aftertaste with plasticky earthy notes. Bitter almonds finish. Odd. It starts out gloriously, then goes downhill in a bitter, artificial kind of way. Hard to see why, really. (0.5l bottle, from Marks & Spencer, Edgware Road, London.)
