500ml bottle. Pours dark amber with a small head. Aroma is sticky toffee and foam banana sweets. Taste has lots of sticky toffee with banana and mango purees on the bitter finish.

M&S bottled. Great big raspberry jam aroma, loads of biscuit and then a dry gooseberry palate. Lovely deep amber red colour. Orange and grassy finish, slightly medicinal and Adnams peppery characteristic. Really like this.

500 ml Bottle served cold in a 1/2 pint chalice. The M&S version: I had had a porter before this, and was concerned that there might be a clash of flavours in the mouth: this poured dark amber with a thick and rocky off white head. Toffee and citrus aroma. Olde English marmalade flavour is prominent, smooth butterscotch takes the bitter edge off. The tongue finds a bit of honey and muscavado, but the swallow delivers that lovely citric astringency. Alcohol is not particularly noticeable in the first one, but I’ve got another cooling, and I’m anticipating a smack in the chops. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel, gentle carbonation. 3 for £6 at M&S at the moment. My advice is go and get some.

50cl bottle of Marks and Spencer Southwold Summer IPA. A bright copper colour with a thin white head; tropical fruit aroma; big tropical fruit taste, with a light spicy bitterness; and a pleasant, soft, warming finish with a lingering grapefruit taste. This goes to show that the Brits can produce a good American-style IPA.

As Marks and spencer summer ipa. Malty aroma, bicuit and caramel, a touch oxidation. Earthy resin hop in the aroma as well. Hazy light amber colour dense creamy head, that fades to a whisp. Flavour is earthy bitterness, slight chalk, a little boozy. Medium body, average carbonation. Not a fan.

Labeled as Marks and Spencer Southwold IPA. Half litre bottle, poured into La Chouffe tulip. A: Dark amber, clear, small of white head. S: Initial Maris Otter malt and off fruit gave way to citrus hop. T: Less hop content than expected. Moderate bitterness, slightly fruity. M: Medium body, smooth, moderate carbonation. O: More of an English strong ale than an IPA, didn’t seem very summery.

Bottle at Jack’s Sausage Festival - London. Labeled as Marks and Spencer Southwold Summer IPA. Decent beer all around. Pours clear gold with a large, frothy white head. Some bready pale malts mucking about, some tasty citrus, orange, light lemon merengue, moderate bitterness. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish, some further orange citrus notes, lightly toasted pale malts. Very drinkable for the ABV. Nice.
