Very classical and righteously well-known English ale with a pale beige, mousse-like, stable head and a cristal-clear, warm and appealing bronze colour. Malty nose with fruity, orangey and flowery notes, accents of honey, port wine and coffee; taste a nice soft and smooth maltiness well-balanced with sweetish fruity notes, drying towards the finish and ending in a somewhat peppery hop bitterness linked to a bitterish toasted maltiness. Very English, very enjoyable, well-balanced ale.

500ml bottle. BB 28/02/15. Batch A4044. Pours a deep, dark, ruby colour with a generous beige head. It looks very inviting. Stewed fruit, golden syrup and moderate hop aroma but it’s all very subtle and in no way overpowering. Hints of nuts. Light to medium sweetness is balanced by an earthy, medium bitterness which lingers. Medium body which finishes in a semi-dry manner. Decent enough but it didn’t quite knock my socks off.

(Keg at William K Annankatu, 20140702) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had toffee, caramel and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were caramel, sweetness, toffee, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet and bitter. A very, even too sweet English ale.

The taste is almost flat, non perceivable of the aromas or alcohol. Not very impressed, just an average British beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml bottle shared with mr_h. Dark brown, reasonable head. Toffee liquorice malt aroma. Caramel flavour. Smooth sweet and well balanced. Not normally my type of beer but this is a good example.

A very drinkable red beer. Good colour, goes down smoothly. Tasted a few weeks ago, so not sure of all the details

Pours a dark brown with a fluffy off white head. Nose is orange peel, caramel, slightly toasty. Flavor is bright citrus up front, into some caramel and some belgian esters. Finish is slightly roasted with a dose of citrus bitterness. Medium body. Pretty good.

From pint bottle. Pours a deep mahogany with reddish highlights at the edges and a foamy but diminishing cappuccino head. Aromas are stewed fruit - currants, raisins, baked apple - along with some hay, caramel, dark bread and oddly a touch of bubblegum and banana. Taste is dominated by the same stewed fruit notes at the front, amped up by a restrained orange zest bitterness. Hints of caramel and more fruit at the end, although it does fall away pretty quickly. Body seems a little watery for the style, but still tasty.
