Great English style ESB. I thought I hadn’t had this beer before, yet as I sat down and started sipping on it my mind went right back to the pub in London where I first tried it. Even the tap handle came back to mind sharing simular graphics as the label. Little to no head as to be expected. Deed amber iin color. Nice rich malt caracter of high lovlibond caramel malts. Clean refreshing well balanced bitterness. Very drinkable with an alcohol content that will keep me happy.

Musky, horsey aroma. Clear, dark, honey coloured with a ring of white head. Well-balanced malt and hops. Medium body and low carbonation. This may be the ultra-session beer it's so easy drinking, yet could make you legless in no time. Alcohol is definitely not apparent. On cask at Mahar's in Albany, NY.

Lacks the punch (and strength) of the bottled but still a knockout ale. Reddish-amber, plenty of body, malty-fruity. Very moreish.

malt/caramel in the aroma; dark red-amber with a thin but dense head; very smooth, slightly sweet, but with a lingering bitterness in the finish that I didn't care for

Clear bronze, color, good, creamy head, full and active, yet quick to crumble down. Aroma: very airy, some citrus, yeasty, fruity, but wide, wide open, almost empty. Yet, actually, pretty much dead-on for style. Taste: tiny, fruity, slightly bitter flavor right off, then smooth, malty, easy-going. A little too sweet and malty, for my taste, but probably, again, right on the button for what they're trying to do. Yep, kind of treacly, but that's what makes Newcastle so damned popular. Nice, little hops, big, fat, fruity malt, very smooth and utterly drinkable. Body is medium, at best, and finish is, perhaps, too short, too sweet. Overall, not to my taste, but a great example of this style.

Hand pulled at the Sadlers Arms, Solihull, West Midlands. Delicious beer - all round good stuff. Rich, malty flavour: fudge, chocolate and berry. Smooth, full, refreshing and creamy. Thick, ice cream lacing, and a deep chestnut colour, with a tasty caramel aroma. V. v. good.

Cask Condtioned, White Swan, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. It's an average pub for real ale quality, but I was told by the barmaid that this was new on that day (her excuse for not knowing that broadside was up on the pumps). Sweet, perhaps a little fruity.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2008 April, 2004. Green Man, Essex. I came here lured by the promise of a range of gravity cask ales, only to discover Greene King beers plus Broadside. Oh well! A dark amber fruity premium bitter with mouthwatering fruit juice and a grapey sweetness which almost becomes acidic in the finish. Slight caramel note in the nose which returns faintly in the finish mingled pleasantly with, by now, a raspberry fruitiness. Fresh fruit is the key here, and I love it! [3.8]
Aug, 2005: Britannia, Chatham. Bitter rather than fragrant hops. Sweet muddled fruit & toffee, slightly fat, tasting vaguely rancid. A stewed quality. [3.0]
March, 2006 <a href=http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/59/592 of Wales, Covent Garden. A sweet and fruity beer. Background bitterness emerges from the shadows in the swallow. The ripeness of the fruit is just a little too oily and sweet for my taste. [2.6]
Feb, 2007Duke (of York), Bloomsbury Good condition. Hugely fruity ale with well soaked hops which colour and tone the malt without giving any sharp or undue bitterness. Good, solid sweetness and a gentle yet firm mouthfeel. Good seaweed tang in the finish. [3.7]
April, 2008 The Three Horseshoes, Cranleigh. Lovely glowing deep mahogany. Bramling Cross hops? - tastes like Ruddles. A very pleasant drop. Very satisfying. [3.4]

Cask conditioned at The Tottenham, London. Deep amber/copper colour, minimal head. Aroma of nuts and red fruits. Flavour is a bit alcoholic with a substantial hoppy bitterness, which leaves a nice aftertaste.

Cask conditioned. Rich malty aroma. Hops, malt, marzipan and earthy flavours all compete with underlying sweetness throughout. Enough bitterness in the finish to prevent cloying.
