3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Handpumped @ White Horse (London). Brownish amber with a medium off-white head and some lacing. Aroma is of caramel, mineral/earthy notes and fruity presence. Taste is slightly malt (breadied malt) with toffee, mineral/earthy notes, fruity presence and a light but sticky bitterness. Light/medium body. Moderate carbonation. Mild, but still tasty. Drinkable aplenty and thirst quenching. Well executed!

3.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask. At a shitty Wetherspoons in Birmingham. Anyhow. Appearance: ruby red, thick creamy off white head. Almost looks nitro. Aroma: sweet, dark fruit, lots of malt and some grain. Flavour: fruitcake and a hint of cake spices (nutmeg and cinnamon) a lot of malt and a nice prune and malt finish. Not bad.

Cask@ Blue Stoops Chesterfield. There,s something I just love about ruby coloured beers and this one is no exception. A beautiful berry flavour with a nice balance of hops and bitterness which simmers for a while before taking off. Couldn,t get enough of the stuff and can,t wait for it to return to the bar. Excellent beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask at Wetherspoons, Streatham. Pours a dark amber with a slightly off-white head. Aroma is sweet with caramel, a little dark fruit and a hint of lemon. Medium body, mild carbonation. Caramel, a little dark sticky fruit and some orange. There's also a slightly metallic taste on the finish which sticks around. OK, not great.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cask at the White Lady USE. Pours reddish brown, thin, off-white head. Aromas are fruitcake as promised, but also a sulphurous, yeasty note, figs and cooked dark fruits. Taste lets it down a bit though... Goes too sweet and one dimensional. Sweet finish. Ok.

2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
At the wharf. Reddish light brown with a very thin almost clear coloured head. Aroma of caramel and real malts. Flavour is thin roast and more caramel with a well done moderate bitterness. Body is medium and quite interesting. Finish is grainy and balanced.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
3 or 4 pints at Deep Ellum, December 2013
Nice to still see some English beers on cask occasionally around Boston that arent called "Old Speckled Hen".
A picture is worth a thousand words and how can I outdescribe the pint pictured here? Head is off-white, well-retained, leaving light lacing and clarity is very high. Seems to be in tip-top shape.
Light caramel, raisins and plums in the nose tends towards the maltier side with the caramel somewhat outdoing the fruitiness, though it does dry out sufficiently on the finish. Maybe a touch of dusty hops, quite EKG or Saaz-like but used very sparsely. Maybe a touch of cardboard-like dullness in the nose. Aroma strength is medium, quite good for the style.
Filling in the mouth, it at first seems too malty, too full-bodied and just all-around too dull and heavy for the style/intended purpose. Some fruitiness enters, hop bitterness, albeit light, does actually attempt to balance and the carbonation engages enough to stave off a lot of the body. And the beer isnít terribly sweet, just sort of thick, for lack of a better term. And of course, thatís all relative to the style, this isnít actually a thick beer. By the end of the first pint, it had already begun to go down more easily. The second and third were no problem at all (though that may be due to other problems, ahem, reasons....).

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask @ Wetherspoons, Milton Keynes. I canít believe itís taken me this long for Broadside! Ruddy brown with a thick white head. Aroma is complex: figs and malt, but also sulphur and sheet metal. Taste is sweet and warming, accentuating the malt and fruit. Verdict: lovely, but temperamental. Must be spot on if in cask, otherwise itís an acrid mess. Search it out in worthwhile establishments.
