HogTownHarry (3175), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Sep 12, 2007 Cask. At The King’s Arms, Waterloo, London. My notes are a little thin here - it had been a long day, and we were dying for a curry, plus we’d been standing in the street yakking (me, my wife and Dan) over 4? 5? pints, so .... Light copper pour, average off-white cask head. Fairly sweet malt aroma, dry, dry floral hops - appealing, actually, and based on the effect, it seemed stronger than the Bombadier or the Fullers London I had at the same time. The taste came in a bit sweet, hint of ripe apple, but enough light floral/herbal soft hop bitterness to even it out - the pint went down ver-ry smoothly, thankyouverymuch. Average body, a bit chewy, nice touch of astringency, I could have wished for a slightly long linger on the palate, but overall an above-average cask ESB.
SaintMatty (423), Tallinn, Estonia Aug 20, 2008 Cask (The Castle,Basingstoke) - Copper coloured with a bit of a haze. Very fruity and rich aroma with some fruit cake hints. Fruity and slightly musty taste with raisins and some spicy malt notes. bman1986 (72), Broadstairs, Kent, England Aug 16, 2008 Cask at The Butchers Arms, Herne: Dark orangey brown beer. Strong flavours of fruit and bread with a little maltiness. Very rich and tasty. Good beer but I could only drink a couple. gary07734 (128), Tyne & Wear, England Jun 18, 2008 Red-ish brown half pint at local beer festival.
Taste is bitter, quite fruity and loads of malt. Bitter after taste. Fairly average pint nothing special. alexcandy (11), chatillon-sur-seine, France May 21, 2008 Nice strong heavy beer. Great with food and I think a very winter drink. Lots of flavor and depth to this. So much better than the bottle broadside. wheresthepath (210), Buckinghamshire, England May 16, 2008 [at the Ferry Inn, Southwold, Suffolk] Initially rich, malty, smooth - went down very easily. Aftertaste a little weak and watery, bitter but well balanced. Very pleasant.
The draught version is weaker-tasting than the bottled version, and different flavours are apparent (notably malt rather than fruit). Both are good drinks, and I couldn’t actually recommend one over the other (I’d choose the draught year-roundwhen I was having a laugh with my mates, and the bottle in front of a fire on a cold winter’s day!), but I don’t know how Adnams can call them the same beer!
