Cask conditioned. Rich malty aroma. Hops, malt, marzipan and earthy flavours all compete with underlying sweetness throughout. Enough bitterness in the finish to prevent cloying.

Gravity @ Newport Ale House, Isle of Wight; clear golden brown; plenty of dark fruit - prunes, raisins; more malt than hop; a tinge of alcohol - it tastes stronger than it is; splendid full mouthfeel; sweetish; fruity, bittersweet lingering finish; a longstanding favourite, it needs savouring and can’t be rushed

This is my wife’s favourite beer! Well it was in August 2006: when I wrote this on BA.
This is serious drinking beer, full of colour, full of powerful flavours and aromas. A dark ruby-red strong English Ale which demands respect.
My wife and myself drink it in ’The Nelson’, Southwold. The pub is full of naval stuff, as you would expect, it is also only 400 yards from the brewery. The horse-drawn dray delivers to all the pubs in Southwold even to this day, a great sight.
Adnams are pushing their beers into the ’Free Trade’ more and more at the moment and are expanding. Their beers are now available all over the UK. I have not detected any lowering of standards or tastes of any of their beers. I try them whenever I come across them, Broadside at its best, is a very very good beer.

Deep ruby colour, thick body and strong bitterness. Very robust beer but a touch too bitter for my personal palate

Cask at the King’s Tun (JDW). Dried fruit and maybe a little muscovado on the nose, then the palate is a fascinating combination of dryness and sweetness, with malt and raisin notes and faint hints of dark honey and oak.

Appearance: Golden-copper body, fairly clear appearance, with a small, though sustained white head.
Smell: Fruit cake aroma of raisin pulp, dried apricots, and chopped red apples with a sweet-scent of caramel and bready malts.
Taste: Sweet maltiness at the start, with tastes of caramel, light treacle, and (English) toffee. Fairly bready throughout. Varied fruits. Leafy, lightly grassy hops with a medium degree of bitterness. Very slight chalky quality. Drying, malty finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Light carbonation.
Overall: Fairly nice, balanced ale.

Deep brownish-amber color with a off-white head that sticks around. The nose is very nutty, malty, some nutmeg and fruit. The taste is mildly sweet and hearty, the finish mildly bitter. Palate is medium/full, carbonation is obviously soft. Overall, a nice, if unsurprising ESB.
