Pours a dark reddish brown with two fingers of frothy ecru head and patchy lace. The nose is round fruity and roasty malt, like dark bread with light molasses, figs and lightly peppery hops. On the light side of medium-bodied it features fine carbonation and a lightly spicy, bitter-hopped finish. It also has a touch of cardboard-y oxidation, but I have no idea of when this bottle was packaged. Sweet malt with notes of fig, dark bread, faint molasses, pepper and light cardboard. This is an interesting enough beer, I just wonder if this particular bottle was a bit past it’s prime.

11/08/2007: Adnams Broadside Original looks murky and dark brown in the glass with a golden hue around the edges. It has a frothy beige head. The aroma presents mats and fruity cream. The flavor contains darkly roasted caramel and cooked apple. The flavors are strong, but are melded together well. This beer is balalnced and solid with a soft, mellow mouthfeel.

1 pint .9 fl. oz. bottle (Alc 6% Vol / Best Before 20 Nov 07 / 6233 1868) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #438 for this beer.

Bottle. Dark reddish colour with an off-white head. Aroma: canned pears, almonds, alcohol, black currant. Flavor: malty, fruitiness, black currant, caramel, light roastiness, some alcohol. Sweet but more dry and bitter towards the end. Just a bit too much alcohol and medicinal bitterness in the finish.

(bottle) Slightly hazy, dark amber colour with a thick beige foamy head. Sweet toasty malty aroma with fruity notes of red berries, traces of caramel, vanilla and shy hoppy notes. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderately toasted malty taste with present fruity accents, accompanied by shades of caramel, licorice and herbal hops; medium-dry, slightly fruity and toasty finish, rounded up with a light to moderate hoppy touch. Good one (06.VII.09).

Bottles from Waitrose. Brown/Red with an off white head. Very morish bottled ale with plenty of hops to balance the sweel malty back bone. A fair bit stronger than the cask version but quite similar.

500ml bottle into a half pint glass. Whiskey color, scant sandy head. Smells: sappy, sulfur, dusty, and fishy/salty. Sweet, treacly, and "dark" fruit flavor, balanced by chocolatey bitterness. Light palate. Pretty good and much better than the sum of its parts; flavor reminds me of Old Peculier.

500 ml bottle. Clear, reddish amber body with a fine off-white head. Aroma is malt, caramel and overripe fruit. Flavor is sweet, light roasted malt, ripe fruit, grassy hop and some warming alcohol. Really nice indeed.

(Bottle from Co-op, Long Stratton) Poured a very dark red with a huge fluffy off white head that resembled honeycomb a bit. Lasted for ages. Aroma of rich malt with big fruit, cherries and brown sugar. Taste a sweet fruity maltiness with biscuit and caramel hints. A bit bready with a full bodied flavour. Finishes bitter with an element of sweet sugar. Really nice, a solid strong warming bitter with a big flavour. Lacing on the glass was brilliant. Tasty.
