Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 27, 2004 Light fruity nose, malts, some hops. Strawberry. Copper brown clear with off-white lacing head. Medium-thick body with medium carbonation. Starts fruity, light malts. Good acidity through after, nice rounded bitterness. Finish is fruity. After is medium dry bitter. BigBilly (127), London W3 6PF, England Jul 24, 2004 500ml brown bottle. Poured a clear mahogany with frothy gold head. Chilled. Nice malt treacle toffee, fruit mince aroma with lime notes. Roast nuts, malt, sweet smoky flavour with some alcohol. Long bitter grapes finish. Medium bodied enough to still be refreshing on a hot day (as it is now as I drink this) it is so easy to drink that, considering its % Vol the label should carry a warning "Dangerous when chilled". turbothy (717), Bonn, Germany Jul 14, 2004 Looks very ale-ish. Nice aroma, pleasant roasted taste. Good malty aftertaste, but a bit too fizzy. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 22, 2004 Bottle into Duvel tulip glass; purchased 6/2004 at Binny’s, Grand and Wells. I was very pleasantly surprised by this beer. I checked up on its percentile after buying it, and I expected nothing special. Instead, I got a very unique experience. This is maybe the best-smelling beer I’ve ever had: caramel popcorn, a bit of yeast, and butter toffee were strong in the nose. It poured a deep ruby color with a beige head, fair lacing but nothing special there. It tasted very much like it smelled, only it had an undercurrent of dark fruitiness and understated hop bitterness on the finish, which I would have hoped to be longer. Creamy in the mouth and yet just acidic enough and medium-bodied enough to be really refreshing. Overall: balanced and silky smooth. I’m glad I picked this up on a whim. rajendra82 (698), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Jun 21, 2004 The beer came in a 500 ml. brown bottle with a best before date of 3 February 2005 on the back label. The pour was clear reddish brown with a decent sized reddish white head. The lacing was good too. The aroma was sweetly malty with some earthy mild English hops lurking in the background. The taste was similar with chocolate malts, dark skinned fruits, rum raisins, and charred wood. The hops were restrained, but provided a peppery kick and a dry mouthfeel. It is a bit of stretch to call this one a Strong Ale, as this is at a mere 6% ABV. I would put it in the category of an ordinary Brown Ale. But call it what you may, it is quite good. ARMed (485), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 19, 2004 Ruby brown brew with a small minimal head. Creamy and flavorful brew with a sweet butterscotch / caramel malt flavor. Smooth and bitter at the same time. A good tasting beer that goes down smooth without the sharp alcohol taste. BigBastard (668), L.A., California, USA Jun 3, 2004 Bitter, but not hoppy, with a slight malt flavor. Bitterness lingered at the back of the tongue. Not really my favorite style. winkle (453), Brisbane, Australia May 29, 2004 Poured a deep copper colourwith a creamy white head - some lacing. Earthy hop and malt nose. Malty body with some alcohol evident and an enjoyable bitter finish. Has a nice soft mouthfeel. I’ll like to have a session on the cask version. A good beer.
