thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA May 8, 2004 This bottled brew poured a foamy medium sized light brown colored long lasting head that left behind a good lacing. The body was a softly carbonated transparent brown color. The aroma was mild with notes of sweet malt. The palate was mildly vinuous initially then settled down onto a more mellow malt bite with a slightly bitter finish. Very malty flavor masked somewhat by the vinuousness of the overall tone of the ale. A decent brew to start of the evenings ratings. Cheers! Lunkie (1020), Glen Iris, Australia May 8, 2004 Sweet spicy flavour with dark red brown colour and good lacing. Burnt malt flavour with rough palate. aracauna (2357), Georgia, USA May 8, 2004 This is a beautiful color, a deep ruby that’s fairly clear. The head is a bit fizzy, and fades incompletely pretty fast. This is a malty beer. A little wood and a good bit of caramel, brown sugar and cherries. Not a lot of hops present and a bit sweet in the finish. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA May 5, 2004 Mahogany pour, thick foamy head and lace. Caramel or toffee aromas, sweet malts and a sour fruit. Sweet malts, caramel, hops, some spices and alcohol flavors. Thick, syrupy finish of alcohol and spice. Skip (206), Indiana, USA May 2, 2004 Deep red color and an aroma that is fresh and balanced between malt and hops. The taste is dry and rich with a medium-full mouthfeel. The cream-colored head is well-formed and well-retained. Not great, but a very pleasant beer.
BückDich (4793), McCall, Idaho, USA May 2, 2004 Dark mahogany color with light off-white head. The aroma has residual sweetness with some malt & a bit of british blah. The flavor is very metallic with musky fig & crappy over-bitter european hops, unbalanced, bland. Finishes a little roasty & also metallic. MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 29, 2004 (On cask) Malleable caramel malt bends into attractive apple syrup shapes...Slight roastiness lies underneath the chewiness and also undermines the horsy aroma...All ends in a somewhat chalky and fizzy quiet fiasco...
haddonsman (1234), Derby, Derbyshire, England Apr 26, 2004 Updated: Aug 26, 2008The bottled Broadside really shines through, bit more of a malty-fruity kick to it than with the cask. Has a thinnish head with little lacing but doesn’t detract from being a real mouthful of decent English ale.
