Initial fruity apple aroma gives way to a smooth creamy caramel nut base, and as it warms some peppery alcohol. Lovely persistent bitterness consistent with good pommy ales, and some of that caramel comes through as satisfying sweetness. The body is a bit light considering, although the carbonation is at a delicious median. A lasting bitterness has you appreciating this beer for quite a while after placing the glass down. Quite a good drop. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 16, 2006 From a shaped 1pt. 9oz. brown bottle with a short blurb about the ale and a best before date on the back label. Poured a cloudy bronze hued caramel brown with a foamy. bubbly topped pale tannish head that reduced to a sticky thin bubbly lacing, moderate carbonation. Had a aroma of apples, raisins and currants with a buttery malt background. A slick, textured medium bodied mouth feel, above average drinkability. A big malty taste, toasted barley, buttery carmel, with a ripe dark fruitiness and a mild hop bitterness in the middle, a slight alcohol burn in the palate and a sweet fruity finish.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 16, 2008 Updated: Oct 20, 2008500mL bottle from the LCBO. Pours a very dark ruby with a large beige head. Nice looking one. Aroma: Not a whole lot going on in the nose from this one. Some OK caramalt, maybe a hint of some herbal hops. Some toffee, almost like a good but muted Dopplebock. What is there is nice (it improves dramatically as it warms). Flavour: Starts out very nicely with a wave of sweet British malts, then flows well into some very dry hops, with a touch of alcohol and a very dry finish/aftertaste. I was surprised by the dry hop character to the flavour given the aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a tolerable level of carbonation for the style. Sticky and sweet fruity malt elements become more apparent in the aftertaste to add some decent complexity. Quite a tasty one, with some aspects I have never come across before in an ESA. Seems a lot stronger than 6.3% abv. jjuf1853 (482), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 31, 2008 Bottle. Nice dark amber colour with a moderate lingering white head. Fruity nutty aromas. Quite sweet on the palate but finishes with a nice dry bitterness. More sessionable than its alcohol content suggests.. A fine English strong ale.
