Hoppy aroma. Golden coloured smooth on the palate and hoppy with a crisp dry and creamy malt finish.

Rad Lion Southwold. Draught. Thin, little flavour, some odd orangey scents, but nothing much else. Like a failed attempt at an 80’s Brit lager. Dire. Difficult to believe its Adnams beer.

Cask conditioned handpump Lord Nelson Southwold A golden beer with a white head. The aroma is nicely hoppy with some orange and lime citrus notes. The taste has some citrus marmalade. Easy drinking and very tasty.

Cask @ Bridge House, London. September 08. Golden with a small white head. The aroma is malt, citrus and metallic notes. Similar flavour, low bitterness...forgettable. I guess it’s brewed for marketing purposes rather than for quality.

[cask at Thatched Cottage, Maidenhead] I had really enjoyed the bottled version of this beer, so was delighted to find it in cask form locally. However, I was also a little wary - firstly because I have heard that Adnams cask beers dont travel well, and secondly because their cask and bottled variants often seem to be completely different beers. This one poured an odd dirty deep gold colour with a moderate white head. Smelled lager-like, with a hint of the Adnams maltiness. Taste was initially lemon sharp with grapefruit sourness, and a little grassy hop too, with a slight carbonation. However, these flavours were quite muted and it somehow reminded me of a cheap, watery lager. Over the course of the pint it did start to mellow a little and reveal the smooth, relaxing Adnams malt that I love, but the predominant impression I came away with was still of a weak, watery and rather sour beer that is not a patch on the bottled version.

Handpulled cask at JDW Watford. Very pale straw with a good white head. Pleasent flavour but very understated. Carbon neutral means they trucked the mimimum quantities of hops in to Southwold.

Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Gold. Odd aroma, quite restrained, of slightly burnt buttered toast. Taste isn’t appealing: hay and straw backed by a nasty plastic tang. Bit like natural gas. Slight bitterness. Some low alcohol lagers are a bit like this. I think Adnams should have ensured ’the UK’s first Carbon Neutral beer’ tasted good.

Cask Conditioned at The Bree Louise, London Hazy blond color, creamy head (some nitro in the pump). Simple aroma, even smells of dirty water. The flavor is quite grassy, with light cereals, unfortunately there is this disturbing dirty water feeling. The final has a light pleasant cookie crispness, but too much bitter for this beer. Maybe not so bad, but it doesn’t please my taste.
