3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JensenTaster (1718) - DENMARK - NOV 7, 2005
(cask)My first experience with an old ale with such a low alcoholvolume. Funny and very good as a sessionbeer, I think. To me it was a mix between a dunkel and a bitter. Easydrinkable, but with tones of tar and peat in there somewhere, made my looking for my southwest a once. dark rubyred, no head. low aroma of earth and malts. Taste was as above, light, but with dark impressions.

Handpulled cask at the Wenlock some time ago. A dark brown ruby tinted beer with caramel and malts in the nose. The taste is very malty with coffee flavours. Nice hidden alcohol.

Cask Conditioned, at the Wenlock Arms, London. Earthy brown coloured body. Old style ale in my opinion. A bit thin looking though. Smooth ashy notes amongst a flattened malt background. Medium length palate.

Cask@The Roebuck, Richmond, London. Some nice flavours come through, mainly anise and toffee. Lightly sweet to start with a dry finish, some light roast and acidity towards the finish. Its OK, but lacks depth of flavour.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 chriso (7063) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 24, 2003
Dark ruby colour. Uses rye in the mash. Malt is the dominant feature of this beer. Nutty overtones. Sweetish finish. I certainly wouldn't describe it as "clean and refreshing", nor would I expect a winter ale to be. In fact, I'm not entirely clear what Adnams are aiming at with this beer - a red "autumn" style or a "winter old" style. It seems to fall between two stools. Not bad, but nothing special. Handpump, The Cherry Tree, Woodbridge, October 2003.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 yomintyfresh (53) - USA - JUN 13, 2007
A bit darker than the Broadside and appears about the same. The bitterness is a bit overwhelming when consumed alone; would be good with some sort of roast.
