COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled; Occasional.
Originally brewed as a one off to celebrate the opening of our new brewhouse and our new distribution centre, we have decided to repeat the beer again in 2009. It came first in its class at the 2008 World beer awards and has also won a Gold medal at the 2008 BBI (British Bottlers Institute) awards. The beer was created under the direction of our Chairman, Jonathan Adnams, whose instruction was to ‘Brew something to wow me’.
The beer, our version of an American IPA, is brewed with a blend of Wheat and Pale ale malts to give a spicy, biscuity undertone to the beer, but it is in the hops where the beer really shines. A blend of hops from England, Slovenia and America (namely Boadicea, Columbus and Stryian Goldings) combine to give a wonderful grapefruit and tropical fruit aroma and bitterness that is balanced by the sweetness of the barley.

Bottled (Tuulensuu, BB 02/2011). Deep golden color, small white head. Fruity-yeasty-bready aroma. Grassy, kind of hayish-fruity flavor, some cat piss too. Quite simple strong ale. Ok, hops are there, malts are threre, but this is it.

(Bottled) Clear copper with a small, firm head. Mild and aromatic, exotic-herby-hoppy, citrusy aroma with some stingy cat pee hints. Flavor is moderately toffee-malty, exotic-lemony-hoppy, slightly sweet, and somewhat less cat-peeish than the aroma. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium-bodied, very easily drinkable with medium, quite soft carbonation. A smooth and drinkable, reasonably hoppy and aromatic brew - but the hops are (for me) a bit too close to cat pee to be enjoyable.

500ml bottle #9421, from Adnams Cellar & Kitchen shop in Richmond. Best before 10 April 2009. Mid gold colour, with decent condition and a lasting of-white head. There are plenty of hops here, introducing a spicy orange zest and tropical fruit element to the aroma and a firm bitterness on the palate but they are refined rather than exuberant. Coupled with a modicum of fruity malt and biscuity overtones this produces a beautifully balanced and deliciously drinkable beer. Subtle but assertive is a difficult balance to strike but Adnams have managed it here. More than the sum of the parts and probably the best Adnams beer I’ve had. Shame it seems to have been one-off in bottle only. Wouldn’t have called it an IPA myself but what does it matter anyway?

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2011 Bottle # 740. A clear gold coloured beer with a minimal head. Easily the hoppiest beer I’ve ever had from Adnams, and really good for it. Delicious orange and grapefruit notes in the nose. and the same citricity in the mouth together with a gentle stinging spiciness and a good malt backbone and decent bottle. I don’t know if Adnams have ant intention of repeating this beer. They really should, although as Craig says, leave out the unnecessary cardboard packaging and drop the price a little.Score 4

Bottle. Golden with a small head. Aromas are sweet biscuit malts with tropical fruit. Floral with peaches. Some herbal, metallic notes. Flavours are sweet sticky tropical fruit mix. Herbal and flowery with a gently prickly grapefruit bitterness finish. Quite like an IPA in style.
