COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottled; Occasional.
Originally brewed as a one off to celebrate the opening of our new brewhouse and our new distribution centre, we have decided to repeat the beer again in 2009. It came first in its class at the 2008 World beer awards and has also won a Gold medal at the 2008 BBI (British Bottlers Institute) awards. The beer was created under the direction of our Chairman, Jonathan Adnams, whose instruction was to ‘Brew something to wow me’.
The beer, our version of an American IPA, is brewed with a blend of Wheat and Pale ale malts to give a spicy, biscuity undertone to the beer, but it is in the hops where the beer really shines. A blend of hops from England, Slovenia and America (namely Boadicea, Columbus and Stryian Goldings) combine to give a wonderful grapefruit and tropical fruit aroma and bitterness that is balanced by the sweetness of the barley.

Bottle. Some subtle sweetish aromas (vanilla?). Soft mouthfeel. Slight sweet taste. Hops kick in then, soft flavours but not over-powering. Nicely balanced for an IPA (if this is what they were going for).

rmasa (324) - Vantaa, FINLAND - JUN 11, 2010
Pours golden with a small white head; aroma is hoppy, fruity in both citrusy and apricot or mango sort of sweet sense, with a biscuity malty backbone; flavor is moderate bitter, mostly sweet fruity with also hints of pine in the aftertaste, in the background biscuity malty and slightly caramelish; body is medium - quite smooth with low to moderate carbonation, but in this case a bit crispier mouthfeel would probably have made a better impact. This could really be the beer to bring together the best parts of English and American brewing, but ultimately it leaves you wanting a bit more.

Pours a light straw with a small white head. Nose has citric and pine aromas on it. Mainly orange zest and grapefruit. Big on the citrus throughout the flavour. Pale malts and caramel also play a part. Good brew

Golden, cloudy colour. Some smell of citrus and hops. Taste of citrus, malt and hops. Middle carbonated. Got bitterness from the hops that is noticed most in the after-taste, but that is throughgoing.

Marks and Spencers branded "Southwold Winter IPA" bottle. Golden with a fast-shrinking white head. Smells metallic and grassy with some sweet malts. Taste is like copper pipes, but theres some fruitiness - a little stewed pear and raisin. A nice amount of bitters and malts make the finish really pleasant and long lasting.
