COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available (pasteurised) in 500ml bottles and 500ml cans.
A refreshing beer of real flavour - distinctively hoppy and dry with malt aromas. Delicious served cool.
Adnams brewery has stood in the heart of Southwold for over six hundred years and "Southwold Jack" appears on our beer labels. He continues to guard over our longest-serving beer brewed here in Southwold on the Suffolk coast -The Bitter. Bitter goes well with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed. Our Bitter also makes a good aperitif.

500ml bottle into an imperial pint glass. Pours a dark brown with a slight chill haze. Just a small half finger head than doesn’t last for long with a few streaks of lacing on the glass. Aroma has dark fruits typical of English bitters along with toffee/caramel and some burnt toast. Pretty average. The flavor continues the English fig, prune, toffee characteristics but I like that there is an additional bready/grain flavor. Everything is just a tad bit muted but no off-flavors are detectable. Bitterness is light with great grassy hop flavors. Mouthfeel is slick and silky but a little sticky which is slightly distracting. Overall, a good English bitter but not quite up to the Fullers level. Still, I love this style and would really like to sample this out of a cask.

For a beer that has come straight from the bottle, it looks as good as beer can: Lustrous amber with an enduring collar of white head that is leaving good lace down the glass. What impresses me about this beer, and indeed most of Adnam’s beers, is how it/they exemplify all that is good about the malt character of classic English bitters and the elegant balance with English hops. It is a harmonious blend of ripe citrus and orchard fruitiness and slightly herbal hoppiness. Rich, full and dripping with autumnal bounty. This is reflected in the flavour which is silky and oily in the mouth. Imagine this pint, some cheese and an afternoon in a pub with your favourite bar maid and, my friend, life doesn’t get much better.

Does leave a bit of a watery aftertaste. Still pleasant tho, refreshing. I will buy more.

500 ml bottle. Pours amber with a medium lasting white head. Aroma is of grassy hops, caramel malt, and ripe fruit. Body is medium and tangy. Earthy hops followed by caramel malt and some fruit on the palate. Finish is long and earthy. I can’t say I enjoyed this brew.

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours turbid Carolina mud brown with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is bitter hops, caramel malt, tannins. Tastes dry, tannic, ESB-ish but with not as much sweetenss as that style, and with finishing tea-like buttering hops. Meh.

Amber colour with tiny white head. Noses of heavy hops. Slick in texture light oily, medium body and rather dry/bitter. Medium body. Bitter and some sweet notes on the palate. Finish is rather quick, leaves some hints on the palate, could be longer and forestanding to my liking.
