A refreshing beer of real flavour - distinctively hoppy and dry with malt aromas. Delicious served cool. Adnams brewery has stood in the heart of Southwold for over six hundred years and "Southwold Jack" appears on our beer labels. He continues to guard over our longest-serving beer brewed here in Southwold on the Suffolk coast -The Bitter. Bitter goes well with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed. Our Bitter also makes a good aperitif. Available (pasteurised) in 500ml bottles and 500ml cans.

500mL bottle. Ruby color, off-white head. Aroma of bitter grass and malt. Tastes of fresh rye bread, baking yeast, bitter wooded hops. A well done English Bitter. Lightly carbonated. (3328)

Brown 500ml bottle with a 4.5% Bitter inside, best before 16th July 2009, drank on 22nd April 2009. Poured (twice) into a La Chouffe stemmed tulip shaped glass. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Deep amber body with a very good, rich and high tanned head. The beer had a teak wood sort of hue to it, clear and wholesome looking too. Very different to the cask version and a lot stronger in alcohol. The aroma, taste and mouthfeel just don’t match up and why should they, this is obviuosly a completely different beer. Hops, barley and nuts in the aroma, along with some malt bread and toasted brown bread. The beer just tastes right, good bitter bite and a hoppy aftertaste, a classic British Bitter. Adnams are a favourite of mine and this is the sort of product that highlights why. A joy to hold and drink!

Bottle. Poured clear reddish brown color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium bitters sweet flavor with a medium bitters sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid interesting beer.

500ml from Arden Wines- a pretty big fish to have slipped through the net. Attractive, Ribena-ruby with a slim white foam. Light, aniseed-sprinkled hop aroma with underlying chocolate and soap. Soft, slightly soapy hop with aniseed and thyme-like notes; chocolate coated nuts. But in truth, not that interesting. Blandness approaching John Smiths territory: wet air, English-style.

Strong, malty aroma has a fruity overtone, mainly pear and grape. It pours a clear, dark coppery amber bordering on mahogany with a nice light tan head that leaves some generous lacing. Malty flavor is rather bitter, but not fiercely so, with subtle notes of fruit, wood and caramel and a touch of smoke. Smooth texture has average body and a fair amount of fizz.

Bottle at Griffin’s Steakhouse, Stockholm, Sweden. Has little to no aroma at all, a slight grassy note but not much. Taste is slightly bitter but very watery, more of everything would’ve been great. Drinkable and thirst quenching but boring as hell.
