COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available (pasteurised) in 500ml bottles and 500ml cans.
A refreshing beer of real flavour - distinctively hoppy and dry with malt aromas. Delicious served cool.
Adnams brewery has stood in the heart of Southwold for over six hundred years and "Southwold Jack" appears on our beer labels. He continues to guard over our longest-serving beer brewed here in Southwold on the Suffolk coast -The Bitter. Bitter goes well with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed. Our Bitter also makes a good aperitif.

Bottle, enjoyed while pulling the rest of my beets and carrots out of the garden before our projected cold snap of -15C in the next 24 hours. It’s weird to think that the cold is coming, as it is 18 degrees C and sunny right now. Medium orange amber with a modest white head that laces thickly. Aroma is husky grains and caramel. Grainy caramel flavour, with a kiss of bitter hops to finish. Touch of metal. Not a bad working-in-the-fall-sunshine brew.

Bottle from Asda, High Wycombe. Copper with a low white head. Lots of malt, a little caramel, some autumn berries and a light earthy bitterness to finish. Yes it’s a standard bitter from a big regional, but as usual Adnams manage to do it a little better than the other big regionals and- somehow- manage to hide the pasteurization. Decent.

Caramel and whiskey cask aromas. Light tan color. Mainly mellow sweet malt, mild bitterness. Light soft body, still crisp though. Solid example of the bottled bitters that get this this away.

Bottle. Thanks for sharing, Bil. Light estery and rum-like brown malt aroma. Creamy, dry, fresh. A solid bitter, I thought could have used a little more bitterness, but had a nice yeast profile, a good mineral show, and some yummy fig-like toasted malts. A little bit neutered by the bottle presentation, but workable.

Pours a darker orange/reddish colour with slight head that dissipates quite fast. Aroma is hoppy with hints of caramel, malt and fruityness. Carbonation is medium and a bitter body, but aftertaste is quite hoppy and leaves a malty finish. Generally a good allround bitter for summer.

Bottle from Tesco’s. Poured a clear medium amber with a broken white head and a little initial carbonation. The aroma is weak malt leading to a medium bitter flavour with some malt and bitter hops on the smooth, slightly watery palate. The bitterness lingers for a while in the finish. A decent English session bitter and quite refreshing when cool.
