4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Jimthechap (1195) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - DEC 18, 2012
For a beer that has come straight from the bottle, it looks as good as beer can: Lustrous amber with an enduring collar of white head that is leaving good lace down the glass. What impresses me about this beer, and indeed most of Adnam’s beers, is how it/they exemplify all that is good about the malt character of classic English bitters and the elegant balance with English hops. It is a harmonious blend of ripe citrus and orchard fruitiness and slightly herbal hoppiness. Rich, full and dripping with autumnal bounty. This is reflected in the flavour which is silky and oily in the mouth. Imagine this pint, some cheese and an afternoon in a pub with your favourite bar maid and, my friend, life doesn’t get much better.

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours turbid Carolina mud brown with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is bitter hops, caramel malt, tannins. Tastes dry, tannic, ESB-ish but with not as much sweetenss as that style, and with finishing tea-like buttering hops. Meh.

Amber colour with tiny white head. Noses of heavy hops. Slick in texture light oily, medium body and rather dry/bitter. Medium body. Bitter and some sweet notes on the palate. Finish is rather quick, leaves some hints on the palate, could be longer and forestanding to my liking.
