Bottle from Whole Foods in Louisville - Pours amber with a thin quickly receding tan head. Full to heavy bodied with soft carbonation. Notes of thick chewy malt, leather, alcohol, wine, oak, pepper. Very nice, not overly sweet, restrained hop notes. A nice sipper.

330ml bottle, Nov 14. Pours mahogany brown with thin off-white head. Not as rich as expected with this ABV, rather smooth, drinkable and balanced with mild dark fruits, brown sugar and malts. Went down quick.

33cl bottle pours with a dark mahogany colored body that supports a thin tan head. The aroma offers up pretty inviting caramel and plum to fig like sweet dark fruity esters that rolls into a bit of booziness at the end of the draw. The taste is very nice as it delivers a pleasing blend of sweet caramel, a dash of chocolate malts, sweet plum and fig like fruity esters and then a boozy bite with faint astringent notes to add just the right balance. Darn nice sipper.

(2012 vintage) pours unclear medium dark brown reddish with a small somewhat reviving light beige head, some lacing. brown spicy maltiness, warming booze, caramel - some layers, red fruits, sherry and wood - barrel-aged spanish sherry - with some of its tannins, some bananas and other estery fruitiness, earthy notes. light carbonation, medium body - oily and a bit sticky; sweetish caramel, astringent woodsiness and lightly earthy finish. sherry coulis and caramel sauce on a (under-ripened) banana split. not as strange as it sounds. thankfully english-y. i’ve come to particularly appreciate these english barleywines, so different than foreign ones, i.e. crafted in american fashion. this is not a grand cru for sure but it’s interesting and different enough.

Aroma is caramel and stock English malts and ale yeast. The flavor is caramel, earthy, slight scotch and a mildly sweet and tangy finish.

Aroma of lots of dark fruits, taste is more dark fruit, nice toffee malt, definite alcohol! Pretty good though and would drink this again.

Dark reddish brown pour with a brown head. Aroma is dark fruit. Taste is malty base, sweetness, dark fruit in the finish. Little creaminess to this. A little thin for a barley wine in my opinion. Tasty though. So-so lacing.

The aroma is boozy with caramel, grains, hops, and earth. The appearance is cloudy amber-brown. The taste is like the aroma with a bitter finish. The palate is off. Overall not bad but a bit flat.

2012 edition from a 330ml bottle to Porter Bar goblet. A: clear but very dark chestnut brown body with a decent head. Leaves some spots and trails of lace. S: dark fruit aromas with a hint of fruit cordial. T: sweet and lightly boozy; characteristics that can be unappealing in this style but just restrained enough to mix nicely with the other characteristics. These include prunes and hints of red wine, light coffee, dark cherries and toffee. M: medium-full bodied; nicely warming but a bit too hot in the mouth. O: interesting version of the style that is definitely worth trying.

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2015 Pours a hazy dark-chocolate brown with almost no head (a very thin ring of tan head is present.) Right away the nose of substantial diacetyl: rather buttery, and some banana and rummy caramel. Some vanilla, candy, and moss. Body is oily with a very very fine carbonation blanket that overall feels like a rather dense fluid that is not oppressive in any way. Flavor is light candy, wood, vegetation and slight sap, a bit hot on the exhale, slight rummy, and a very mellow bitterness that rounds out the finish of the flavor. Overall, a sippable English barley wine that is perhaps more enjoyable than the rating would suggest. Nothing is out of balance and the strong diacetyl actually contributes pleasantly to the candy flavors of the beer. Definitely loses a point for having no head whatsoever! The caramel flavor grows on me as it warms.
