Cask at NWAF, 2011. Dark reddish-brown pour. Vinous nose. Prunes, dates and fig aromas. A little cognac in there too. Rum like flavours with raisins, molasses and dark chocolate. Deep, warming finish.

Appearance-dark red nearly black, with a light coffee head
Taste-dark chocolate, licorice with some sweetness, alcohol
Overall- not too sure, the alcohol is very evident, it’s a bit like a port in that you sort of want to sip it. Might be better with food.

7.5% abv. Notably sweet and treacly black barleywine. Very drinkable. no bitterness,

Bottle - Very dark brown. Tan Head. Low to medium carbonation. Full bodied. Roasted malts. Dark fruits. Salty. Moderately bitter.

33cl bottle, said to be bottle-conditioned but not much yeast spotted. Dark, and about as rich as a 7.2% abv beer can be a few months after bottling. More complex in the cask - and deeply sensuous if cellared from the previous year. This may well be one for putting away for a couple of years somewhere cool. I will try to update this description a year from now when it has had time to grow.

From the bottle, purs a lovely deep ruby with a decent fluffly white head that dissapates fairly quickly into thin lacing. Nose is all about the caramel and dark fruit, prunes, bit of plum, and a bit of maltiness. The palate & flavour is a bit dissapointing. the carbonation is a bit prickly & the flavours just haven’t quite married together. There’s caramel , bit of fruit, some spice, nice bit of sweetness on the finish, then a kind of dry nothingy finish. I would be really keen to lay one down & re-rate it in a year/6 months as there’s a fair bit going on here.

Gravity cask at the Old Fountain. Pours clear, dark maroon-brown with a light film. Lightly sour, dark fruits in the nose, faint medicine, with toasted malts. Flavor pretty sweet, with caramel and toffee, toasty, rich malts, some light fruits, faint citrus bitters. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Finishes sweet and malty, with brown sugar and toffee, and mild warmth. Quite good.
