4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Tequilakongen (287) - Oslo, NORWAY - JAN 20, 2012
Very dark brown colour, mahogany. Small off-white head. Rich in aroma, there’s wood and overripe fruits. Taste is also powerful, some sweetness and quite bitter towards the end. I much prefer this to most barley wines I’ve tasted due to the subdued sweetness. (Bottle)
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Foffern (271) - Bergen, NORWAY - APR 3, 2012
Bottle at home. Pours a clear deep reddish brown colour with a small beige head. High carbonation. Soft and sweet aromas of dried fruit, prunes, chocolate, rye bread, some roast, leather, oak, and sweet malt towards brown sugar. In the mouth I find hops, more dried fruit, sweet malt with caramel and brown sugar, and some roast in the end. I also find some licorice. A nice light bitterness with a slick and a bit watery mouthfeel. This is a tasteful and easy drinking beer, good balance and not too sweet.

Draught. Dark red/brown, white head. Sweet and rich. Fairly assertive alcoholic taste. Plummy, raisiny. A decent beer, nothing special though.

label stated "best before 11/97" whoa.. i dont know if you wanna call this a barleywine, this is some dark malt goodness, nice rich molasses, thick palate, very drinkable, not a typical barley wine but a definite good beer
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 bacchanalia (145) - milton, Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND - DEC 3, 2010
From the bottle, purs a lovely deep ruby with a decent fluffly white head that dissapates fairly quickly into thin lacing. Nose is all about the caramel and dark fruit, prunes, bit of plum, and a bit of maltiness. The palate & flavour is a bit dissapointing. the carbonation is a bit prickly & the flavours just haven’t quite married together. There’s caramel , bit of fruit, some spice, nice bit of sweetness on the finish, then a kind of dry nothingy finish. I would be really keen to lay one down & re-rate it in a year/6 months as there’s a fair bit going on here.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Rodders (137) - Norwich, Norfolk, ENGLAND - MAR 28, 2009
(Half Pint from Gravity at the Fat Cat, Norwich) Very dark brown with a small off white head. Nut smell with some sweet fruit. Initial taste was a well balanced dark malt - sweet with lots of roastyness and a drying hop finish. Fruit and caramel - a heavy beer. Very nice, but best served in small doses I suspect.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Nocturne (136) - Northwich, Cheshire, ENGLAND - FEB 17, 2012
330ml bottle, dated 2009. Pours a dark amber hue with minimal head. Notes of vanilla and burnt toast. Deep caramel taste with vanilla and a hint of smoke. Just lacking a bit of complexity, and some more alcohol heat would have been welcome.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sobchak (131) - Skagen, DENMARK - DEC 4, 2005
(Cask, The Wharf, Aalborg) - A warming barley wine with a toffee sweetness, and a spicy, fruity seville orange dryness.
