Cask - The Trafford Arms, Norwich. Small, bubbly beige head, mostly lasting, deep ruddy chestnut body. Spicy cherry & berry aromas. Contrasting sharp & sweet cherry & berry battle on the tongue with some yeast & an ever so slight hint of roast. Medium body, quite soft with a delicate spritz & a lingering spicy tanginess.

Sampler from bottle at Nærbø Ølfestival 2011 at the Cardinal stand. Clear mahogany with a light brown film. Dark syrup, brown sugar, molasses and dark dried fruits on the nose. Sweet, alcoholic and light bitter flavors with notes of honey, dried figs and dates. Light spicy. Medium to full body. Syrupy. Finishes with a light dry tongue.

Cask at NWAF, 2011. Dark reddish-brown pour. Vinous nose. Prunes, dates and fig aromas. A little cognac in there too. Rum like flavours with raisins, molasses and dark chocolate. Deep, warming finish.

Gravity cask in a fair few places since I was a teenager in the late 70s. Nowdays seems far too sweet and cloying to me. Plenty of warming alcohol but nowhere near enough hops. My latest sample was at the Wenlock and despite lenghthy maturation it was still pretty sickly. Not the beer of yesteryear.

Cask @ Moan & Dove, Amherst, MA: Deep ruby brown, chestnut beige head. Fruity grain malt nose. Rather sweet, chewy caramel malts, big toffee, plum, raison, treacle. Finish with a firm hop bitterness. A bit clashy are the malts and hops sometime, but still a very drinkable and enjoyable offering.

A very decent english barleywine that pours a deep amber/brown with an of-white head. Aromas of spice, and flavors of old hops, honey and a light bitterness.

tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - SEP 28, 2011
First tasted this barley wine at the winter ale festival held in Glasgow in February 1997. Cask and gravity dispense. Ruby black with an open buff head which rapidly disappeared leaving no lacing. Strong, intense aroma of damsons and berry fruit. Rich powerful mouthfeel. Dark malt complex gives a full range of flavours with fruit to the fore. Hedgerow berries, plums, black grapes, overipe cherries and a hint of dark chocolate. Very slight prickle of hops in the aftertaste which fades fast as sweetness returns with an alcoholic warmth in the slightly dry vineous oak finish. Excellent example of an English barley wine at its very best. Highly recommended.

(330ml ), As you swrill the goblet tiny hurricanes of booze covered raisin..wealthy malts.....smoky covered toffee bombard the air. A lifeless dark glass of evil ruby sits...... rivers of toffee rich malts,,raisins soaked in roastiness all in cloying streams.
