Cask - no carbonation - highly sweet aroma, plums and grapes in the mix - flavors of figs, prunes, raisins - a near cloying sweetness isn’t balanced well enough by the minor hop bitterness - alcohol is very pronouced.

Huh, so this is a barleywine. On cask at the Gaslight. Dark brown porterish look, small head, fine bubbles. Smell toffee, molasses, some sort of roastiness and floral hops. Mouthfeel slightly chaky, medium-full. Taste mild coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, and a slightly crisp hoppy finish. Kinda wierd.

Clear dark deep brown body with mainly lasting head. Dark fruits on the nose, a little sweet. Taste comes across a little thin, notes of vegemite, crystal and dark fruits again.

Gravity cask in a fair few places since I was a teenager in the late 70s. Nowdays seems far too sweet and cloying to me. Plenty of warming alcohol but nowhere near enough hops. My latest sample was at the Wenlock and despite lenghthy maturation it was still pretty sickly. Not the beer of yesteryear.

Bottle that Styles found in the Michigan Beer Repository. Best before date of 11-97. Brown color. Lots of floaties. Thin white head which is pretty amazing considering the age of this beast. Cola-like aroma. Sweetish and slightly oxidized malt. Thin mouthfeel. Fair at this stage of it’s life. I would like to try this fresh off the cask.
