| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 13, 2007 13-Nov-07 (500 ml bottle, Best Before 21-Nov-07: Purchased 08-Aug-07 for $3.79 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) SSB pours a brilliant, ruddy-amber, the color of a well-ripened peach. The body is hazy and capped by a small, off-white head that recedes to a thin, but nearly full layer while leaving ice crystal lacing on the glass. The nose is fairly nutty and buttery, but lacks hop aromatics. However, compared to most of the English bitters I’ve tried, this one is quite malty and more flavorful, with a pleasant nutty taste and mild hop bitterness that remain balanced into the long finish. As the beer warms, a nice finish of delicate smokiness emerges, slightly increasing in muscle as the beer approaches room temperature. Mildly carbonated and gently bitter, the beer is smooth on the palate. The beer is medium in body, so there is more weight to the palate than most bitters, especially those widget versions that come in a can. With this much flavor and body, is this really a true bitter, or something more? Given my limited exposure to true examples of the style, I can’t say with any certainty how this one fits, but either way, it’s very tasty and enjoyable to drink. garrison (455), Cin. city, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 12, 2007 From a 500 ml bottle purchased at "Jungle Jim’s Market" in Fairfeild, Ohio, presented to me by my girlfriend Nancy - This bottle poured a brown brew with a bready aroma and a very rapidly diminishing white head. Tastewise, well, it’s definetly a bitter, but it has an interesting, almost liquorice-like, finish. Beer2000 (1785), Kristiansand, Norway
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 21, 2007 500ml bottle @ Cardinal. Clear red/brown body with a nice, small dense, beige head. Fruity, malty aroma. Flavor is rather mild, fruity, malty with a bitter finish. Quite nice really, but not very outstanding in any way. Lowe1983 (1029), Fairborn, Ohio, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 15, 2007 Pours a copper color with an off-white head. Aroma is pretty malty with caramel malts, dark fruit, and only a slight hint of some floral hops. Flavor is also mostly malts. Caramel and dark fruit dominate with only a slight hint of floral hops. Does have a slight bitterness to it on the finish. I was hoping for better.
