COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Adnams Topaz Gold ’A pale golden ale’ Tasting notes & ingredients A pale golden ale at 4.0% abv with soft apricot and lychee notes, medium body and bitterness but with a crisp finish. Brewed with two Australian hop varieties – Summer, a relative newcomer, and Topaz, which has been around for a few years. What’s the story? Topaz Gold is inspired by one of Fergus’ visits to the hop merchants where he ran into an Australian hop supplier. The hop variety Topaz has been found to have a lot of wonderful flavours so we use it much later in the brewing process so we can extract very small amounts of bitterness and lots of flavour. Want to know more? Topaz was initially developed because a small amount can add a lot of bitterness, reducing the amount of hops needed in a beer. It’s perfect to be enjoyed alongside spicy Thai and Indian food.

Cask in The Dog & Duck. Colour is clear amber, white head. Nose is grainy malt, that typical Golden ale sweetish character. Taste is same. Typical golden ale. Grainy malt, sweetish slightly honeyed flavour. Body is light.

Aroma slightly fruity, mainly grape and some citrus, but dominated by a wine-like and slightly alcoholic hint. Appearance is great, a dark gold that doesn’t reach copper, looks refreshing when poured with its small white head. Taste is slightly disappointing, there isn’t much in terms of malt, it’s light, and some of the fruit is gone leaving a flavour that is reminiscent of diluted cheap red wine or wine yeast. Even a tad vinegary. There is however a nice balanced and clean bitterness left after the flavours are gone. On the palate it is light. Overall it looks and smells better than it tastes. Maybe it wasn’t well kept or I’m just not a fan of Topaz hops for aroma.

Hand pulled at the British Oak, Stirchley, Birmingham. Very proficient Golden: seasoned, meaty hops, which longer on the tongue developing. A beer to make you love the style again - certainly when fresh on cask.

Cask conditioned at The Chequers, Oxford. Gold with white head. There is an initial sharp perfumed bitterness, unripe gooseberry perhaps, however this is smoothed out by a more subtle, leafier note giving quite a delicate flavour. Decent biscuity malts, a pretty decent beer.

Tasted this in 3 craws Anniesland Glasgow. Hand pump dispensed. Clear pale amber with a thin white head. Sweet fruity aroma of mandarin and golden syrup. Pale malt base gives a digestive biscuit base. Strong fruit notes of mandarin, butterscotch and golden syrup. Very slight bitter after taste with dry hop resins present. Finish is malty with sweet fruit present throughout. A decent session blonde ale.
