COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Adnams Topaz Gold ’A pale golden ale’ Tasting notes & ingredients A pale golden ale at 4.0% abv with soft apricot and lychee notes, medium body and bitterness but with a crisp finish. Brewed with two Australian hop varieties – Summer, a relative newcomer, and Topaz, which has been around for a few years. What’s the story? Topaz Gold is inspired by one of Fergus’ visits to the hop merchants where he ran into an Australian hop supplier. The hop variety Topaz has been found to have a lot of wonderful flavours so we use it much later in the brewing process so we can extract very small amounts of bitterness and lots of flavour. Want to know more? Topaz was initially developed because a small amount can add a lot of bitterness, reducing the amount of hops needed in a beer. It’s perfect to be enjoyed alongside spicy Thai and Indian food.

Cask handpull at Muggletons Spoons Maidstone. Clear gold lasting white head. Yes some good tropical fruit here. Not much malt. A little perfumed. But it’s got a decent tropical fruit flavour. Bit thin on the malt though.

Light bodied with fine carbonation. Decent condition. Moderately crisp to finish, light sugars, light grainy hay, mild citrusy hops. Very nice beer.

Cask conditioned at The Chequers, Oxford. Gold with white head. There is an initial sharp perfumed bitterness, unripe gooseberry perhaps, however this is smoothed out by a more subtle, leafier note giving quite a delicate flavour. Decent biscuity malts, a pretty decent beer.

Cask conditioned air pressure Holborn Whippett London 06/09/12. An orange gold coloured beer with a whitish head and lacing. Nice citrussy hops throughout. The Adnams house yeast doesn’t show itself. Orangey flavours are really good. Well balanced and tasty with a spicy edge as well. I thought this was single hop Topaz which would have made it the best Topaz beer I’ve had. Maybe it’s the Summer which gives it a lovely mellow edge.
