’A pale golden ale’

Tasting notes & ingredients
A pale golden ale at 4.0% abv with soft apricot and lychee notes, medium body and bitterness but with a crisp finish.
Brewed with two Australian hop varieties – Summer, a relative newcomer, and Topaz, which has been around for a few years.

What’s the story?
Topaz Gold is inspired by one of Fergus’ visits to the hop merchants where he ran into an Australian hop supplier. The hop variety Topaz has been found to have a lot of wonderful flavours so we use it much later in the brewing process so we can extract very small amounts of bitterness and lots of flavour.

Want to know more?
Topaz was initially developed because a small amount can add a lot of bitterness, reducing the amount of hops needed in a beer.
It’s perfect to be enjoyed alongside spicy Thai and Indian food.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW, London. Poursclear gold with a creamy, white head. Mostly dry straw in the aroma. Light sweet flavor with some white sugar, modest lemon zest, creamy pale malts. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Decent condition. Moderately crisp to finish, light sugars, light grainy hay, mild citrusy hops. Very nice beer.

Cask (Castle, Cambridge) (7:3:6:3+:13=3.2+)
Lovely spicy aroma, ginger or galandal, and spicy eastern food. Taste is a bit duller, more a traditional twiggy bitter. Pale, small loose head. Palate is a little drying and with dusty bitterness in the finish. A decent quaff, but a bit disappointing after the aroma.

Cask from The White Lion, Disley, Cheshire, £3.10/pint. Pours orange/amber with thin white head and good lacing. With more malt than hop it’s a quaffable, inoffensive summer beer, like so many at this time of year, although some grapefruit and apricot notes and a slight and balanced bitterness to the finish elevate this one a little above the crowd.

Beese (2560) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - DEC 1, 2014
Cask at The Flag, Watford on 28 Sep 2012. Poured a very hazy golden colour, with a dish water white head. Aroma of flat malt, slight funk and tropical fruits. Soft fruit flavour, with some grass and tepid hop bitterness. Finish was very funky, with apples and cooked fruit. Not good, but in fairness The Flag is a sh*theap of a pub that can’t keep beer.
