Loose brown head dissipated quickly. color is a medium brown. Smell is banana, plum, grape, champagne, good amount of rotten grapefruit smell in there. Mouthfeel is light, plenty of character depth though. Lots of carbonation flavor, alcohol comes through quite a bit as well. Earthy palate, honey, caramel malt flavor, not much hops to speak of. This is kind of how an American would make a Belgian beer, but with more hops. Aftertaste is the most inviting. No masterpiece, but I very enjoyable. This beer gets a 10 for intangibles. Nice "wild/lively" characteristic. Enjoyability 4/5.

Swaroga (1340) - Brussels, BELGIUM - NOV 28, 2011
33cl bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a big gray head. Nose : floral, cheese yeast, dried fruits, caramel/toffee malts. Sip : medium body with a high carbonation. Sweet raisins going into little bitter that mixes roasted malts with a background hops. I was surprised by the yeast aromas but apart of that, it makes a decent strong belgian brown beer.

tfredvik (1118) - Oslo, NORWAY - NOV 13, 2011
Dark brown reddish body, with a slightly tanned, creamy, long-lived head. Very sweet malty aroma with lots of caramel. Also yeast, spices and light fruits, isn’t there an apple in there? Medium sweet taste with a light bitter finish. The mouthfeel isn’t that great: the point is, ladies and gentleman, that alcohol, for lack of a better word, is good. Alcohol is right, alcohol works. Alcohol clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. But in this beer the alcohol is too dominating, both flavour-vice and on the palate. The alcohol doesn’t really do anything for this beer, other than producing a vodka like feeling that shouldn’t be present in beers. At least not in my beers. In addition there is a faint metallic feel. Still, the taste, flavours and aroma are quite good, making this beer drinkable despite its shortcomings.
[33 cl bottle, from Vinmonopolet Vika, Oslo]

ChainGangGuy (4373) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - NOV 9, 2011
11.2 ounce bottle - $3.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown body, ruby-hued at the edges, and with an initially large, beige head.

Smell: Lightly toasted dark bread, given some sweetish sugary accents and a little sprinkling of ground nuts blended with a variety of fruit notes, a sliver of alcohol, and a lightly earthy yeastiness.

Taste: Fruity, nutty dark sugar crystals, with further fruit-based tastes of ripe plum, hawthorn berries, apple, and grapeskins. Slow-moving maltiness of dark bread given a thin veneer of chocolate powder and sweet dark brown sugar. Slight yeastiness. Pinch of peppercorns. Fairly light touch of alcohol. Lively, fruity, semi-dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-high carbonation, nicely effervescent.

Overall: The Dark Gold Ale has a pleasant sweetness to it, ample carbonation, the alcohol is fairly well concealed, and delivers a nice mix of flavors. I enjoyed it. One for all, all for one, Musketeer-lookin’ guy!

KyotoLefty (6447) - Kyoto, JAPAN - NOV 1, 2011
Bottle from Asao. Fruity, caramel and chocolate nose. Cherries, raisins. Somewhat spicy yeast. Dark brown with orange tints and a large, tan head. Fruity, chocolate, rich and taaty. A but of tartness, so though it is quite sweet it don’t cloy. Ok, just a little. Really quite tasty with my pork chops.
