3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Reviewed 1/3/2013. Thanks to Jay for the bottle! 11.2 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
A: Pours a cloudy burgundy color with evident carbonation rising up to the top. Seeing as I intentionally poured the bottle to maximize the head, it was a five finger light mocha color. The retention is weird - instead of just gradually fading, the texture just becomes more bubbly, until it collapses in on itself. The end result is a much creamier looking one finger mocha-colored head that leaves massive clumps of lacing on the glass. If any beer was made for a Duvel tulip, this one is it.
S: Apple, pear, chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar. Rather simple by BSDA standards, with a weird metallic note detracting some.
T: There’s an initial quality of apple/pear yeast esters, before the beer finishes with notes of chocolate, raisin, and brown sugar sweetness. Occasionally, a bit of hops appear. This is definitely on the dubbel side of the BSDA fence. There’s very little thought provoking complexity, rather it fits into the category of simple refreshment.
M: The vibrant carbonation gives this a light, airy texture. Actually, the vibrant carbonation makes this one really scratchy and even harsh. It’s pretty difficult to focus on the initial smoothness of the malt structure when the palate is being bombarded with carbonation and - to a lesser extent - astringency. Aftertaste is a touch sweet after a while, but this manages to subdue the booze quite well.
O: Certainly, it won’t give Rochefort 8 any fits, but it’s not a bad choice for a BSDA. Keeping in mind its flaws (rampant overcarbonation, simple flavors, metallic aroma), it’s still decent.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This dark ale pours with a great frothy head and a perfect dark brown colour. It has a sweet aroma but a bitter taste to the tongue and a lingering pleasent after taste.

1.5 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 4/20
750ml bottle from Total Wine with a cage and cork seal. Solid pop of the cork, which probably hit the ceiling even though I thought I was holding it adequately.
No foaming, but the aroma and flavor suggest a moderate infection. The aroma, in particular, has some of the floral, barnyard, and basement aromas from bacteria or, less likely, wild yeast. The bottle has a 11/13 date on the bottom and its been properly stored. Searching, I immediately found a report of another bad bottle, so quality control may be an issue.
O: very disappointed.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Deep ruby colour with large fluffy beige head that lingers significantly. Candi sugar, glacé cherries and belgian yeast in the aroma. The taste is very sweet, with plums, cherries, raisins, toffee and bready notes toward the finish. Very prickly on the tongue but full bodied and sticky. This one is too all over the place for me and lacks balance. Certainly not at all undrinkable but somewhat disappointing.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Dark copper body, medium head. Aroma has yeast, caramel and dried fruit. Mostly red fruits. Also some hairspray. High carbonation. Taste has more dried fruit and yeast. Pretty simple. Finish is more fruity with dates and raisins. A standard dark Belgian, not very much distinguishing features. Carbonation is too high, makes me burp a lot. Not very smooth. With so many better options available, I will probably not have this one again.
