Reviewed 1/3/2013. Thanks to Jay for the bottle! 11.2 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a cloudy burgundy color with evident carbonation rising up to the top. Seeing as I intentionally poured the bottle to maximize the head, it was a five finger light mocha color. The retention is weird - instead of just gradually fading, the texture just becomes more bubbly, until it collapses in on itself. The end result is a much creamier looking one finger mocha-colored head that leaves massive clumps of lacing on the glass. If any beer was made for a Duvel tulip, this one is it. S: Apple, pear, chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar. Rather simple by BSDA standards, with a weird metallic note detracting some. T: There’s an initial quality of apple/pear yeast esters, before the beer finishes with notes of chocolate, raisin, and brown sugar sweetness. Occasionally, a bit of hops appear. This is definitely on the dubbel side of the BSDA fence. There’s very little thought provoking complexity, rather it fits into the category of simple refreshment. M: The vibrant carbonation gives this a light, airy texture. Actually, the vibrant carbonation makes this one really scratchy and even harsh. It’s pretty difficult to focus on the initial smoothness of the malt structure when the palate is being bombarded with carbonation and - to a lesser extent - astringency. Aftertaste is a touch sweet after a while, but this manages to subdue the booze quite well. O: Certainly, it won’t give Rochefort 8 any fits, but it’s not a bad choice for a BSDA. Keeping in mind its flaws (rampant overcarbonation, simple flavors, metallic aroma), it’s still decent.

February 2011. From a 750 ml. corked bottle. Poured redbrown with a tan head. Medium carbonation. Aromas of caramel, fruit, roasted malts and yeast. Pretty good beer.

33 cL bottle. Dark, translucent, garnet color with a big, pillowy, beige head. This nose is immediate dark fruits, apricot, cane sugar, and vanilla. Very sweet up front, with some spiciness and very faint tartness toward the finish. Medium body, good carbonation, and a clean, crisp mouthfeel. Surprisingly dry in the finish. All around, a good beer.

Prachtig kastanjebruin, helder bier met oranje gloed. Flinke lichtbeige schuimkraag. Aroma van specerijen: kaneel en nootmuskaat. Verder gebrand mout en de alcohol komt erg sterk naar voren. Smaak is nogal rechttoe, rechtaan. Bitter, lichtzoete tonen. Koolzuur is ook behoorlijk aanwezig en niet al te prettig, licht tot medium body.

Pours deep reddish brown with a diminishing faint red head. Aroma is sweet and toasty, with leather, wood, dark fruit, and fruit esters. Taste is sweet and toasty, with a herbal-earthy finish. Medium-full bodied, with light carbonation and a lasting finish.

Pours hazy dark brown with a thick frothy head. Toffee, dark fruits mixed with some spice and pepper. Highly carbonated and full mouth. It's a decent Belgian though not complex or interesting. --- Cheers

33 cl. bottle @ De Kelk. Drank in a La Corne horn, thx! to agreeing to this unusual request, I just wanted to try something in that glass. Dark brown amber, reasonably big, nice beige head. Light touch of iron in the nose, sweet caramel malts, dark sugar, tad sticky, dark fruits,… Taste is caramel, high on the Belgium sweetness side, brown sugar, sweet upfront, dark fruits, sweet caramel & yeast, dark fruit, quite a bit of syrup. M/m body – not too bad.

Smells like dark fruit, alcohol and a bit of a funk. It has a brick-red color with a tan head that’s pretty dense. It has a sweet-sour flavor, like a Flanders red. It has a very lively mouthfeel that finishes fairly clean. It’s delicious!
