1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
0.33L bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a huge, rocky off-white head. Aromas of mineral, particularly iron, bready malt, hints of cooked vegetable.
Mild cereal malt sweetness at beginning, with hints of the iron that is on the nose. Transitions to an almost salty flavor, with some soy sauce and dark spice. Long, herby hop finish with alcohol warmth and sugar sticking to the back of the throat. Medium to full-bodied with sticky mouthfeel and active carbonation. Overall, not my favorite beer. Haven’t experienced the aroma of this beer very often, and it’s fairly heavy both on the sugars and the bittering hops.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Roman belongs to those old-time breweries that traditionally produce the local brown beer (’Oudenaards bruin’) and this one, created in 2008, is essentially a rerun of the former Roman Dobbelen Bruinen, but with a more contemporary look. Tasted under both the current "Dark Gold" name and the former "Finest Dark" name, but it’s the same beer, they were obliged to change the name after a complaint from Anthony Martin’s, creator of the "Gordon Finest" range, for plagiarism. Thinnish, beige, stable head, dark mahogany colour, nose of caramel, dates, nuts, passion fruit, vaguely some iron; taste fruity and malty (nuts, caramel), rather high carbonation (a bit too high for this genre, if you ask me) and an ever so slightly sourish aftertaste with some warming alcohol. Not a masterpiece of the style, in my opinion, but true to its heritage nevertheless.
