Bottle. The pour was a murky dark brown with a small (less than 1 finger) off white fizzy head that dissipated rapidly leaving behind a very thin film and small collar which did allow for some fair spotty streaks of lacing. The aroma was of a dark bread malt and a doughy yeast with notes of toffee, honey, dark fruit (plums and raisins) and a mild alcohol tinge. The taste was sweet and malty with hints of toffee and honey from the start with the finish being about the same but with a touch of dark fruit, a strong yeast presence and a moderate dose of alcohol at the end. The flavor lasted an average amount of time after the swallow with a nice fruity sweetness left on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was just short of medium in body with a mild syrupy texture and a nice strong carbonation. Overall a really nice tasting Strong Ale with a superb drinkability...

Roman belongs to those old-time breweries that traditionally produce the local brown beer (’Oudenaards bruin’) and this one, created in 2008, is essentially a rerun of the former Roman Dobbelen Bruinen, but with a more contemporary look. Tasted under both the current "Dark Gold" name and the former "Finest Dark" name, but it’s the same beer, they were obliged to change the name after a complaint from Anthony Martin’s, creator of the "Gordon Finest" range, for plagiarism. Thinnish, beige, stable head, dark mahogany colour, nose of caramel, dates, nuts, passion fruit, vaguely some iron; taste fruity and malty (nuts, caramel), rather high carbonation (a bit too high for this genre, if you ask me) and an ever so slightly sourish aftertaste with some warming alcohol. Not a masterpiece of the style, in my opinion, but true to its heritage nevertheless.

Bottle at the Cafe Belge in Leuven. Dark brown with a bubbly-foamy head, although it collapses quite quickly. Light spice, toffee, meaty notes, slight alcohol burn. A bit Abbaye de Rocs. Light aroma, which seemed quite pleasant but was hard to review due to the smoker on the next table. Quite a tasty brew.

You could just assume by the name, that this was going to be a dark gold pour, and you would be right. The head, a soft beige, billowed out of the top of the glass before I could catch it. The aroma spilled with it, an almost metallic, burnt caramel with yeast lingering in the afterward. The carbonation is just comfortable; not too fizzy, just right to carry the flavors forward. All in all, this is extremely drinkable. if I didn’t have available one of my regular go tos, this would definitely be my next best bet.

Flaske fra Belgisk Bryg, serveringstemp. 13C.
