1870 Amber Ale with English hops.
An almost forgotten beer style originally brewed in 1870 rejuvenated with a blend of English hops that lend a gentle hint of dark fruits on top of a layer of roasted malts.

Cask (gravity dispense) at Egham Beer Festival, November 2012. Noted at 4.8%. A bit murky. Copper colour. Toffeeish vaguely nutty with a fair ration of earthy hops. A little sweet. Although described as an "Amber Ale" it seemed pretty much like a bitter to me. Perfectly drinkable and not short of flavour but didnít really grab me. Will probably give this another go from bottle.

Bottled 14/06/14. A dark brown coloured beer. A dry malty beer. Quite smoky. Deliberately old fashioned and I guess it succeeds at what it set out to do. Competently drinkable if a bit dull by todayís standards.

Bottle. A, small, dense, off-white head leaves lacings. Clear, dark golden body except for some floaties. The aroma is mostly malty, in a not too pleasant way. Some resiny, grassy hints. The flavor is pretty much the same, with some bitterness. Hints of coffee and roasted malts. Full to medium body with a pleasant carbonation level. Maltysweet finish with a touch of roasted malts. Well, canít say Iím impressed, must say Iím glad I donít live in the 1870ís. 140418
