4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Osprey87 (518) - London via, WALES - MAR 13, 2013
May 2012 - A v nice beer. Of course, the main flavour is smoke. Tastes a bit like cured meats. Most of the flavour is in the aftertaste. Has a sweetness that balances the smoke. A really good sipping beer.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 tmrmwel (510) - Bergen, NORWAY - MAR 13, 2013
Bottle. Pours dark amber, with a big creamy head. Aroma is marvellously smoky, with peat, camp fire and oak, as well as a nice caramel. The body matches the aroma perfectly, with its full creamy texture and soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet with burned malts, smoke, oak barrels caramel and a nice and fitting hint of alcohol sweetness in the finish.

Amber beer with a lasting very nice offwhite head. Malty aroma, smoked, soot, sweet, toffee notes, maybe some vanilla. Malty smoked flavor, roasted, bready, toffee, spicy notes, salami. Malty toffee finish. Smoke is as always hiding some other flavors, but this is good.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 brinehart (152) - Colorado, USA - MAR 9, 2013
Smooth, BBQ type smoke which is well integrated with the beer. Quite characterful fermentation character too, which may be out if style. Overall a fun beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TimE (2584) - Tokyo, JAPAN - MAR 9, 2013
Deep mahogany color. Big nose of caramel, chocolate and smoke. The body is rich, sweet and smokey, but the smokiness seems to battle with the bigness of the Dopplebock and neither side seems to win. Additionally, the beer is a bit too sweet for the style. Drier bocks work better with smoked beers and lower ABV. Still not a bad drop, but I would rather stick to some of Schlenkerla’s conventional offerings.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Brouwerij (407) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 6, 2013
Bottle. Pours a clear dark copper brown with a quarter finger of instantly settlng off white head. No lacing. Aroma is smoky, woody, earthy, oak, bacon, peated malt. Flavor is sweet, smoky, oak, with a strong smoky finish that lingers, hints of bacon. The oak is definitely smoother and sweeter than the beechwood. Very smooth carbonation, medium body, and mildly chewy texture. A rich, smooth, and delicious smoked beer.

Pours a clear cherry red brown, no head and a very light carbonation. Smoky aroma, some bacon, a bit of burnt wood, fruity flavours of cherries and berries. Lots going on but really works well. Unusual, well balanced sweet and smoky. Memorable.
