While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

Bottle, 0,5lt. Found at Valentin - Curious Bierkneipe, Volos. OMG - thatís just the perfect smoked beer and WHY only available for 4 weeks in December?? It got a nice body, looks really rich and heavy. The aroma of course is smoky, but not as much as you thought for a doppelbock. Then, the taste: Thatís 8% alcohol? Of course, the oak wood used gets deeper at all fases of sense-experience, but itís not crushing the other tastes and aromas. A full body that letís you taste all the smoked malt and yet it is a beer there. Got 2 of it right away and it was delicious. The best balanced smoked beer without being a "drinkable bacon", in an amberlike color with not much carbonation (that pairs with the whole beer perfectly)

[Tap] Deep amber in color with a large and lasting off-white head. Aromas of meaty smoke, oak, peat and sweet toffee. Flavors are more sweet than smokey. Toffee, earthy malts, vanilla and milder wood smoke. Lively carbonation. Lingering toffee and brown sugar. Tasting notes from 8/2014.

Bottle from the National Winter Ales Festival. Pours amber with a thin cream head. Light smokey aroma. The flavour starts sweet with caramel notes and a big lingering smokey bacon finish. Very smooth feel. Lovely.

Pours a clear dark amber/coppery color, topped with a fairly small white head. Smokey aroma is not too strong, but still very easy to pick up. The taste is slightly sweet and very smokey (bacon quality), a bit too strong on the smoke-side for me, but still easily drinkable.

Wasnít sure where this would pitch between a dopplebock and a smoked beer. Unsurprisingly given the maker it leans more towards the latter but this is far from a one dimensional beer. Itís dark amber, verging on brown, with the slightest of white heads. Thick and creamy texture. Nose is very smoky and meaty; taste is more of a blend of smoky wood and sweet malt. The alcohol comes in part way through but not in an overpowering way, and there is a really pleasant dryness to the finish. Great.

Pours clear amber, minimal head. Smells like oak smoke, ham, charcoal grill. Taste matches, quite smoky, smoked meats, finishes a bit bitter. Good, not as good as marzen.
