While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

Deep gold pour with very little head, light carbonation. Aroma - smoke, more smoke, more wood fire than meaty. Taste - slightly sweet, toffee, smoky - this is more a bacony smoke than in the aroma. Nice, very different, quite enjoying it on a winter night

A nice smoked beer, not as intense as other beers. Pours a very nice deep orange, with very little head. Smells and tastes of oak and BBQ. Had on tap at The Ginger Man in NYC.

Pours a quick dissipating head atop a clouded, sediment-filled brown orange body. Nose of pre-cooked biscuit dough. Minor taste of smoke and very breaded malt through the body, some hidden pears and honey. The flavour hides the 8%ABV very very well. So smooth and not as "smoked jerky" as the Marzen. Very nice, calm and sip-able. Bottled April 2011, sampled in a tulip glass. Thanks Alessandro!

500 ml bottle. Clear, dark amber color, short-life medium size yellowish beige head, slight smoked ham aroma, medium body, decent carbonation, sweet malty and toffee taste, smokey palate without hoppy notes. Nice one but too sweet for me.

Clear copper with a thin film of head. Aroma more of oak than smoke and some syrup. Taste is sweet over bitter. Body is medium, carbonation low. Heady stuff.

500ml bottle from Archive Beer Boutique 040514. Lots of campfire smoke in the aroma and a good dose of smokiness in the flavour.

Pours a clear copper with a thin film for a head that leaves pretty good lacing considering how small it is. Nose is of smoke (duh) and some malty syrup. Taste is sweet and lightly fruity, offers more smoke and is almost cloying. Smoke level is dialed in just right though, it is just too sweet for my taste. Body is medium-full, carbonation critically low and mouthfeel syrupy. Nice smoked beer but I feel like it would be more enjoyable if it was just a tad lighter.

Bottle (500 ml). Almost clear copper with a medium diminishing off-white head and little lacing. Aroma is gently smoked with wooden notes, caramel, nice fruitiness, breadied malt and noble hops. Taste is moderately smokey with a lot of oak, breadied malt, caramel and light fruitiness. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Smooth but long lasting smokey finish. Light alcohol warming. The smoke is present like in every beer from Schlenkerla, but it fits surprinsingly well with the Dopplebock style. Complex. Really good balance. Well executed.
