3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
0.5 l bottle, thanks Timo A! Red amber color. Thick smoky bacon aroma with sweet malt. Sweet, malty and smoky flavor with thick tarry and bacony smoke. Thick palate. Nice sipper but I prefer the more drinkable Ur-Bock and Märzen from this brewery.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Smokey and honey ham aroma. Clear chestnut color with nice off-white head. Sweet honey smoked ham and malt flavor with a lightly bitter grass finish. Much sweeter than any other Aecht Schlenkerla beers but nicely balanced. Given the sweetness of this beer, I was thinking it might go well with a spiced Christmas cake so luckily we still had some Nuernburger Lebkucken - goes together well.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500 ml bottle from Enniskillen, bought at Country Club Liquors. Nose is lightly sweet, smoky, and caramel with a backgoud hint of bubblegum. All nicely light and balanced notes like most overly smoky "smoked" beers. Clear orange with a small yellowish head. Flavor is lightly smoky, caramelized sugar, and a very light bitterness. Finishes with hints of smoke and bitter.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I was pretty excited to see a Schlenkerla I’d yet to try at my local store and intrigued by the use of oak instead of beechwood in smoking the grain. It is a fairly standard coppery bock color w/ a small white head. The nose is the furthest thing from standard, however. It’s thick w/ musty smoked notes. You can really tell the difference between this and their standard offerings. This feels a bit more nuanced, perhaps a bit floral. This brings to mind aromas of the forest in autumn around a camp fire. The texture is creamy and the touch of alcohol is warm and comforting. I am not sure if my numbers will match up in the end but I think this might be my favorite of the Schlenkerlas.

[Courtesy of yngwie] Pours clear dark brown/amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of smoked malt, smoked ham/bacon. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with a short to average smokey finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Handsome, deep chestnut beer with a level cream head. Aroma of meat, leather, smoked gammon, onion sauce- Nana G’s kitchen circa 1985..and other kitchens of my childhood. Chargrilled meat taste lingering with ash; hints of TCP, custard and a lethal creaminess off the oak- some coppery hints in the finish and way more bitterness than the beechwood-smoked Schlenkerlas. Maybe doesn’t quite hit the heights I’d hoped for but still huge, savoury and very, very drinkable chilled..which is what I’m becoming very, very quickly. Pure lederhosen-slapping, goat-beating loveliness....And I applaud the innovation-within-traditional boundaries that updates a world classic without surrendering its essential and unmistakeable Schlenkerla-ness. Hats off.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Finger of foamy white head that disappears quickly on a bright clear amber orange. Deep woodiness, slight oakiness, campfire smoke in the aroma. A strong malty sweetness cuts through the meaty smokiness, and the big smoke, fire, and sausage of others from the brewery are tamed down a bit for this one, but it’s damn good still. Bacony aftertaste with some sweetness following on an oily body with very soft carbonation.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark coppery colored with little yellow head. Strongly rich tar aroma dominates with smoke and sweet fruitiness, nice wooden oaked touch and caramel. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is more dry with tar still dominating, smoke and bacon here strongly as well. Aftertaste dries with some hops, still bacon and smoke here. Just excellent brew.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
UPDATED: SEP 13, 2013 Bottle, 8.0%. Distinct smoke aroma, but not too much, also some malt. Clear brown colour, seems to have a little red. Tan head, semi-frothy and semi-stable. The flavour has a distinct smokiness and a rather sweet maltiness. The finish is drier and perhaps a bit more aggressively hopped than their Rachbier Märzen. Does not really taste 8%, but it is very good.
