Bottle. Clear amber colour with an off-white head. Loveley combination of smoke and malt. Sweet, but not over the top. A hint of balancing bitterness in the end. Dangerously drinkable with no hint of alcohol.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
500 ml bottle thanks to yeahnatenelson. Pours a mostly clear orange/copper color with a medium white head that dies out. The aroma is sweet smoky malts, some caramel and sugars. The flavor is dominated by sweet sugary smoked treats, caramel, oak, rich candied fruit, some dryness. Very smooth and well made. Lots of oak here. A liter of this on draft would be awesome.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Fabulous ruby red color, with fine, flat head. Delicious aroma of bacon and smoke, a little more reserved than most of the other Schlenkerla beers. Starts with a pleasant smoky flavor, paired with bacon. The beer has a voluminous malt body, the alcohol is really not noticeable at any point. The aftertaste is very smoky, with less bacon aroma, again very weighty malty. In the further course the beer keeps his voluminous malt body. The bacon aroma goes back a little, the smoke flavor remains a strong presence until finish!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Simply a lovely beer, needed a longer lasting head and slightly more vibrant body to be a perfect-drinking dopple. Bottle from Quack-Duck, and a fantastic one at that. Deep brown with just enough amber to keep it translucent. Smells like caramel and molasses, and slightly like earthy fruits (raisin, plum). Wonderful smoky smell. Smoked flavor is medium-to-strong, iron and molasses sweetness (moderate-to-high sweetness) with a tinge of both sourness and of bitterness.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
In short: An abundance of smoked over clean, crisp sugary sweet malts. Great beer even a tad too sweet/sugary
How: Bottle 500ml. Consumed moderately fresh approximately 2 months after purchase
The look: Clear bright golden body topped by a medium off-white head with good retention
In long: Nose as smoky as you would expect from a Schlenkerla. But far from the greasy smoky breakfast for their Urbock or the campfire & burning straws of their Marzen, the Schlenkerla Doppelbock proposes a cleaner smoke character with a distinctive smoked oak character. Taste has a surprising amount of crystal-malt-like crisp sugary cereals. Feels like caramel-color hard candies at times, borderline refined white sugar. A bit too sweet imho to match the excellence and drinkability of the Marzen or even the Urbock. Very clean and crisp. No alcohol presence whatsoever. I love a beers that have a nice smoky character. I also like beers that don’t. Bottom line: I love beer.

Amber color, clean, with good head. Strong smoke aroma, maybe too sweet; Japanese sauce. Full bodied, semi-sweet, smoked but cloying; the final is industrialized.

The aroma is sweet and smokey. The flavor is smooth, round, very sweet, with a lot of smoke and just a touch of firewood.
Very good, but I still find this one too sweet and less harmonious to compete with the Märzen and Urbock.

Hazy dark amber color, with small head. The malt and smoke aroma is sweet and mature. Sweet mouthfeel, full bodied, with good malts, caramel, light fudge; the oak smoke is more pungent that the usual one, and it blends better with the thicker body; quite fat. At this age, it’s delicious.

Beautiful amber color; medium sized creamy head. Wonderful smoke and malt aroma. Good body strength; strong malt flavor; I find the sweetness to be excessively cloying; correct bitterness level, but contrasting the smoke. Very good, but excessive compared to Märzen and Urbock.

Dark mahogany color with ruby shades; creamy head. The aroma is wonderful, deep; smoked sausages, sweet, with light presence of ashes. The body is not very strong, medium, but it’s quite round; good caramel flavor, sausage smoke, moderate sweetness, and a very light sour touch that increases the drinkability; but it misses the bite of the Märzen and Urbock also on draught. It has a correct bitterness, with a pleasant alcohol warmth, but too lean on the malts in the final.
Excellent, I’m having a second glass…

Amber color with copper reflex; the medium-sized head is short lived. The fresh smoke aroma is very nice; but a bit later loses intensity. Full bodied, with a very good malt and caramel flavor; elegant smoke character, well blended; it has a good degree of sweetness, that contributes to create a biscuity touch. Very interesting, but less character than the Urbock and Märzen; anyway, a good number of bottles will find the way to my cellar.

Sweet malt and lightly robust smoky aroma. Clear orange color with a small tan head. Sweet beginning quickly getting a smoky finish with a noticeable medicine finish. This is one that I will have to age.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Bottle) Amber colour, slightly hazy, with brief off-white head. Malty, smoky nose with dried apricots, Seville orange, orange peel, honey and oak smoke. Malty, smoky, slightly fruity taste with notes of orange, dried apricots, honey and smoked ham. Spicy finish with a gentle bitterness and just a touch of sweetness. More than medium body. Complex beer with lots more going on than just massive amounts of bacon. Smoke is more subtle than in the other Schlenkerla beers (well, they’re lovely as well), making this one excellently balanced. Lovely beer.

Poured clear dark copper color with an average light brown frothy head that lasted with very good lacing. Moderate woody smoke malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet smoke flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish. Good stuff

11/11/14/12//12
