While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

Bottle from Premier. Pours a clear amber with a medium white head. Nose is restrained for the brewery - iodiney smoke, caramel, restrained berries (no, really, I’m getting them). Flavor is smoke, really amazing caramel malt that totally coats the tongue, alcohol. Some iodiney smoke comes out in the finish with a bit more alcohol & wonderful sweet malt. If the alcohol wasn’t there this beer would be perfect.

Lightly hazy amber with a small white head, looks lively, very doppelbockesque... Smoky aroma with notes of lightly flowery/grassy hops and abit of sweetness... Very malty flavor with not as big notes of smoke as with most of their other beers, oaky, that seems to muddle the smokiness a bit... Not as lively as expected, medium to medium full bodied with a caramel finish that is a little over the top.. Way too sweet..

Bottle. A - Nice crisp bronze color with a medium sized, thickish, fluffy, foamy, white head. Decent retention leaving a thin foamy lace. S - Really nice aroma with the obvious smoked meat aroma. The oak provides a nice level to the aroma. There is a nice caramel/sweet malt aroma that in other beers can be overpowered by the smoked aroma. A very subtle raisin like aroma as well. T - Like the nose, there is a lot of smoked meat flavor, but not much of a bonfire smokiness. Oak flavor is definitely present, though not dominating. Caramel malt and a subtle dark fruit flavor as well as a very faint hoppy bitterness show up. Pretty complex. M - Medium body with average carbonation. Quite smooth. D - Like other smoked beers I’ve had, this is a one and done for a while, but the complexity is quite nice. Notes: Interesting, complex smoked beer. Smoked meat is the strongest, but this more than other similar beers provides more balance and complexity to the flavor. Has subtle/vague doppelbock hints as well as oak.

Color is a little off for a doppelbock although that could be due to the smoked malt. Aroma is strongly smokey, can only tell that its a doppelbock based on the finish. Overall, this is good, just wish the smokiness was a little more subdued.

Slightly hazy deep bronze colored body with a bright white head. The nose has lots of smoked meat and some caramel. There is also some hazelnut. Smoky wood and a little bit of hay. Notes of caramel. A highly carbonated body that is a little sharp on the tongue. This is a tasty one with plenty of residual sweetness.

Medium beige head. Beautiful deep red body. Deep salty charcoal smoke aroma with grainy, resiny notes. Dry roasty smoky resiny taste with salty charcoal and freshly sawn wood notes. Fullish body. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty charcoal smoke and licorice aftertaste with salty wooden notes. Very harmonic and balanced, with a beautifully pronounced and rounded smoke character. Excellent! Really love the smoke character and drinkability. (0.5l bottle, Amundsen Bryggeri, Oslo.)

Bottle. Pours a brilliant clear medium amber, thin white head. Big smoky nose, but not as complex as expected, lots of malt, spices and smoked sausages going on. Almost dry, medium bodied, fairly low bitterness, a bit low on CO2. Very smoky, malty taste, the slightly buttery Doppelbock notes come through quite nicely, and it finishes rather dry, with the smoke lingering on. Not bad, although I expected a bit more complexity. Aroma smoke, camp fire, bacon, salt, blt. Pour deep golden orange white head good lace. Taste malty balanced by big smokey salty hit of farmers thick cut bacon, touch of earthiness and taste of dobblebock sweetness. MF medium body fine fizzy carb. Overall good balanced beer that tastes like bacon a lot which I enjoy however not something I could drink everyday.

Beautiful red amber coloured, medium sized pale beige head, mild and pleasant smoked panceta nose. Sweet malty, smoked panceta and light hoppy with no trace of alcohol. Sweet and woody smokey finish. Of course, Schlenkerla didn’t disappoint me this time either.
