While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

Bottle from Beer Ritz. Dark brown pour with a beige head. Dark fruit, smoke, wood and raisin aromas. Flavours of smoky bacon, dark fruits, dates and caramel. Fruity finish. Good stuff.

A: The beer pours amber in color with a soapy white head to go with it. S: Definitely quite a bit of smoke, though not quite as campfire heavy as their other beers. There’s a definite oak smell to this (apparently the use of oak is one of the main things that sets this beer apart from their others) it, and just very woody overall. A slight meaty character, which I tend to pick up in smoked beers. T: I can actually taste a decent amount of sweetness from the beer, which has a doppelbock recipe. There is still a lot of smoke and a hint of saltiness to it. There is a touch of fruit underneath, maybe apples. Perhaps it’s the saltiness, but I actually do get some bacon here. M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation. The smoke sort of lingers on the tongue. D: While their beers aren’t always my thing, this was surprisingly good. Certainly quite smokey, but enjoyable and different.

Pours a light reddish with a small head. Aroma is wood, musk smokeyness. Taste is smokey bacon bits. Palate is thick but a bit sticky. A weird but interesting beer

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2011 20110609: Bottle 500ml at home, thanks to Yngwie for the maternity gift. I really needed a rerate of this as I was frankly not anywhere near expecting what I got when I tasted this the first time, and was put off by the intensity. Pours a clear amber with an inch of dense, offwhite head. Aroma is loads of smoked beech, tends towars oak, some caramel sweetness. Taste is very sweet and medium bitter with intense smokey dryness lingering for quite a while. Medium to full body, oily texture and soft to average carbonation rounds off a very complex and interesting beer. 20110122: 6 4 5 3 11 Bottle 500ml shared courtesy of Yngwie. Pours clear ruby red with small, off-white head. Aroma of smoke, sausages, bacon, smoked ham. Taste is light sweet, acidic and bitter, feels like eating fried bacon with tons of HP Sauce on the aftertaste. Light to medium body, thin to slick, average carbonation. This was a bit too much smoked ham and bacon for me.

Lovely bacon bits and ham aroma, it only reminds me of beer every now and again. The smoke is very clean - not clingy like hickory. Good bottle, good cap, clear honey gold with a huge head. This was a chore to drink - creosotic, briny, more a cooking ingredient than a beer, the smoke came off as stale -- and this isn’t my first rodeo with rauch or smoked beers. Bittering was unpleasant. I’m sure that the brewmaster will think that he threw his pearls before swine, but this was not very enjoyable. New Leaf Market.

Bottled 50cl. A huge amount of bacon throughout. Smoky and very enjoyable. Interesting. I find other beers from this brewery a lot more impressive than the Eiche.

0.5 l bottle, thanks Timo A! Red amber color. Thick smoky bacon aroma with sweet malt. Sweet, malty and smoky flavor with thick tarry and bacony smoke. Thick palate. Nice sipper but I prefer the more drinkable Ur-Bock and Märzen from this brewery.

Bottle. Smokey and honey ham aroma. Clear chestnut color with nice off-white head. Sweet honey smoked ham and malt flavor with a lightly bitter grass finish. Much sweeter than any other Aecht Schlenkerla beers but nicely balanced. Given the sweetness of this beer, I was thinking it might go well with a spiced Christmas cake so luckily we still had some Nuernburger Lebkucken - goes together well.

500 ml bottle from Enniskillen, bought at Country Club Liquors. Nose is lightly sweet, smoky, and caramel with a backgoud hint of bubblegum. All nicely light and balanced notes like most overly smoky "smoked" beers. Clear orange with a small yellowish head. Flavor is lightly smoky, caramelized sugar, and a very light bitterness. Finishes with hints of smoke and bitter.
