While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

20101229 500ml bottle from Honeygo. Light motor oil amber with thin beige head. Pretty average looking beer, but thatís where it ends. Aroma is smoky, heh. Well, in fact itís one of the more intense and complex smoky aromas Iíve come across in a while. More of a brine and woodsy smoke with this beer, and with a great hoppy interplay that adds some herbs and late hay. There is less of the (typical) Schlenkerla smoked meat (hate that analogy) and yet itís just as smoked. Gorgeous. Medium bodied with soft eff and a lingering bitterness that begins mid-palate and sticks around with a grassy, herbal, mildly woody note. Late leather and some alcohol, quite warming, savory, damn. This is one warmer that I just want to guzzle. Fantastic stuff. Sheesh, I bought three but Iíll definitely need to load up on this one.

Bottle; Pour is clear copper with amber highlights. The Off white head died immediately, unfortunately. Everything I was expecting on the nose; Ham Roasts and Campfire, Caramel Malts and oak. This is certainly the best Aecht brew Iíve had - it just works or fuses the best; oak, smokiness, roasted ham, campfire, caramel malt sweetness, with a tingling on the tongue. Rounded off with the hallertau - but it takes a backseat to the rest. Excellent really!

Bottle at In De Wildeman, Amsterdam. Red, brown colored brew. Very intense, smoked aroma, burning wood. Aroma fades rather quick. Flavor has a good amount of smoke too, malty sweetness, caramel and bacon. Nice.

UPDATED: MAY 12, 2011 Bottle. Amber with a white head. Aroma: sweet, smoke, campfire. Taste. sweet malt, fresh fruitiness, great subdued smokiness that isnít meaty at all, salt, some candy, caramel, low bitterness, but there is some acidity in the finish. There is also kind of a juniper smokiness that reminds me of my childhood fishing trips (korv grillad Ųver enris). Medium-bodied with noticable carbonation. Really good!
Bottle with best before date a month ago, still as good. Some more tar in the aroma, more salt and smoked meat in the taste. Not sure if this has changed over time, I wonít change my original notes.

Aroma of smoke, malt, and raw grain. Pours copper with light tan head that dissipates quickly. Palate is thin yet a bit oily, like bacon grease. I was expecting a harsher smoke flavor, but this beer is very well balanced and almost subdued considering other Aecht Smoked beers. Starts sweet and smokey and finishes with a nice bittering but NOT overly so. This is a special beer in the smoked catagory. Very enjoyable, with a little bit of "holiday" coming through. I think this is my favorite from Aecht Schlenkerla! Tasted @ 50F.

Bottled from Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Cola colored, brown head. Very smoky nose (duh), wood-notes, malts, perhaps some wheat shining through. Smooth malty and smoky flavor, some liquorice, caramel, sweet initially which later on becomes more bitter. Excellent developing, complex and long-lasting finish, very nice. Similar to all of the Schlenkerla beers this is an outstanding brew. A bit too sweet for me in flavor, but its extended complexity makes this a good addition to the other rauchbiers from this brewery.

Bottle. Copper with a beige bubbly foam. Aromas are toffee and rye malts with smoky bacon crisps and hints of barbecue sauce. Very rich on the nose but not overbearing. Lightly fruity and floral. Flavours are sweet, rich rye with lots of smoke. Apple with peppery, warming alcohol. Some chocolate with yet more smokiness. Easy to drink considering itís strength and character. Very good.

Clear brown pour with a clear body and lively carbonation. The aroma is smoked salmon, bacon, charred meats, and all sorts of pleasantly placed smoke characteristics. The flavor holds smoky bready malts with toffee and caramel being most predominant. More smoky wood, campfire, smoked salmon, and bacon comes through. Mild graininess with a slight floral hop bitterness. Palate is medium bodied with lively fine bubbled effervescence and and chewy body. Clean, smoky finish. Another delicious beer from this brewery.

500 ml bottle from Wine and Cheese Place. Pours a clear copper color with a finger-thick white head that settles into a thin film on the beer. Aroma of smoked pork, wood, campfire, well-done bacon, and burnt sweet toast. Flavor of smoked pork, burnt toast, caramel malts, toasted sugar, peat, nectarine, honey, and corn syrup. The flavor drops out a little from the nose. Medium-full bodied, with a smoky, syrupy mouthfeel and a quick metallic, then lingering smoky finish. Sweet and smoky, and I liked this way more than I expected. All of the Aecht Schlenkerla beers are great, and this and the dunkel are the best.
