While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

Bottle at the Battersea BF 11 and Keg at the Rake (of was it the C&K?) in recent months. Everything that you’d expect from this brewery but for me a tad rich and cloying. I was in Bamberg last November and had hoped to try this then. Urbock was sublimely sessionable from the wood at Schlenkerla but the regulars there warned us that this beer is considered far too sweet for local tastes and I can see why now. Nevertheless a world class sipper..

A delicious smoked beer. Aroma was great. Smoky bacon and beef jerky. Pour was a nice medium gold with a few rising bubbles and a thin off white film for a head. Taste was nice and smoky. The sweetness of the doppelbock seems a little off when paired with the heavy smoke flavor. Seems kind of muddled and leaves a slightly astringent flavor in the mouth after the swallow. Medium light carbonation. Love this brewery as they make the best smoked beers out there!

Sampled on 4/16/2011. This smoked beer pours a slightly cloudy amber brown color form a 50cl bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is smoky, meaty, bready and sweet. A medium bodied Smoked beer. The malts are caramel, bready and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Decent carbonation. Lots of meaty smokiness throughout, not overpowering by very prevalent. You can still taste the sweet malts but the smokiness help balance them. These guys really do know how to make smoked beers. Perhaps a touch of wood in the finish as well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottled sample. Pale copper in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of peppery woodsmoke and slightly sweet pale malts. In terms of taste, the smoke is definitely different than other Schlenkerla products; a bit more spicy and smooth, with a more wooden (as opposed to smoked meat) character. The general maltiness plays a stronger role here too. Medium bodied with no alcohol heat.

Bottle picked up in Chicago and served in a Mikasa pilsner glass. THe pour brings a copper-hued brew with a very strange white head. It started out quite frothy with large bubbles, and then comes a reverse head. The two eventually meet and form a nice, dense white head with good retention. A bit of lacing on the glass and a thin collar throughout. This was the highlight of the beer for me. The nose is overwhelmingly smokey with a bit of a meat character and not much playing behind it. The taste is similar in terms of what the smoke does. Here I can get a bit of the smoked oak, though I can’t say it really adds a positive dimension. The underlying doppelbock is completely gone and I don’t get anything that would indicate this was the base. The taste brings a bit too much tannin and is overwhelmingly smokey. I suppose it’s not that the level of smoke is bad, it’s just that there’s really nothing else there. A bit of an astringent, bitter finish. Really not a fan of this though I could see how one could enjoy it. My least favorite Schlenkerla beer to date. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-19-2011

UPDATED: JUL 15, 2012 Delicious, it tastes the way a campfire smells. The flavor is different from other Schlenkerla rauchbiers, the smoke, while still strong and the dominant flavor, is more mellow. This is a great beer.

16.9 oz. Clear amber/orange with a medium beige head. Aroma of fresh campfire, smoked ham with a light bread scent in the background. The flavor is very smoky with some sweet bready malt and caramel way in the background, the alcohol is well hidden. Medium body with average carbonation and a smooth, long, smoky finish. Overall on hell of a smoked beer, these Germans know how to make a rauchbier.
