3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jarspag (605) - Orange County, USA - FEB 26, 2010
On tap... first true smoked, I believe. Unbelievable how smokey, bbq, bacon like this smelled. tasted similar. while i would say it’s a "cool" beer to try, wouldn’t say I love the taste or could drink more than one.

50cl bottle pours a crystal clear amber with thin white head. The aroma offers up yummy loads of dried smoked pork and some smooth smoke wafting about a tiny ring of date meat. The taste has classic dry smoked pork goodness and then it picks up only more heading to midway. Behind the smooth smoke are modest levels of sweet dates and sweet maltiness with a dash of ripe sweet cherries. I’m not sure I notice the difference in wood type used here. Good stuff.

Sweet and meaty aroma. Dark amberish body; thin head. Flavor same as aroma, sweet and meaty. Can’t tell the difference between beech and oak.

Pours a beautiful translucent mahogany with a small light colored head. Aroma of hunting lodge campfire. Tastes like it smells and no dissapointments.

Oh my this beer is awesome. Smells like ham, jerky... like an orgy of smoked meat covered in a malty sweet glaze of love. The smokiness on this beer makes it taste like bacon. I love bacon, who doesn’t, but the sweet malt taste, the bacon and the nuttiness are beautiful balanced. highly enjoyable.

50 cl bottle @ Timo A.
Rated on 20110627.
Pours clear dark red color with small head. Aroma of very strong smoky ham, sweetish malts and dark fruit notes. Flavor of ham, mild liquorice notes and malts. Slightly bitter palate and even some sourish notes. Nice smoky brew but doesn’t quite meet my expectations.

Rating #734, bottle from Fish N’ Beer. Lighter appearance than expected and ok head. Aroma is quite subdued, smoke, caramel and malts. Flavor is smoky at most, but also caramellish and sweet malty. Only a touch of the bitter finish, and alcohol is very subdued for the 8%. Round and thick palate.

500 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, lasting ivory head, over a clear light brown (SRM 17) body.....nose is light smoke, toffee/caramel....taste is smoke, toffee/caramel, hints of sweetness, finishing with a light bitterness....mouth feel medium, carbonation low. This is a milder smoke than others from this brewery. It is a pleasant, easy drinking beer. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 BeerChaser0078 (880) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAY 9, 2012
Bottle. Pours a hazy brownish orange with a small bubbly off-white head that doesn’t last long. Even though they have used a different wood to smoke the malt this still has that particular smokey aroma distinctive to this brewery with notes of smoked ham, ash, caramel, beef jerky and almonds. Flavour is about the same as the aroma: smokey, meaty, nutty, malty and slightly sweet. Mouthfeel is thick and oily with restrained soft carbonation and a long smokey finish. Despite being a fan of the beers from Schlenkerla, I have to say this one really comes together: superbly balanced with perfectly integrated alcohol and exhibiting the best flavours and aroma this style has to offer.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 trevor211 (974) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAY 8, 2012
Hoooo boy! This is a full rack of baby backs in a glass. Deep amber pour, with a fizzy, dissipating head. Serious smoke on the nose, with cured meats that make this really smell like a butcher shop. Burnt brown sugar and molasses lie behind, lending a note not too unlike a good scotch. Thick mouthfeel, with just enough carb to keep it from being sticky, and the style (smoked doppelbock) keeps it just a bit on the sweet side. Guess that makes this a Kansas City brew, not a Carolina brew. This beer makes me want to develop a drawl, then undercook and devour a giant steak. Ron Swanson doesn’t always drink beer, but when he does, he prefers the Schlenkerla.
