While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt. The hence complex smokiness in the "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is paired with the multifaceted bitterness of finest Hallertau aroma hops. With 8% alcohol and amber color it matures for months in the deep brewery cellars underneath Bamberg into a special treat for smoke beer lovers. www.Smokebeer.com

otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUL 26, 2012
Appearance: deep amber – like the inside of a freshly cut cedar tree. Orange pithy head fades into a thin collar of tight tiny bubbles. Swirls average.
Nose: oak and cedar gets in your face and never leaves. Umami savorance. Applewood smoke and applewood smoked bacon. Brief presence of toasted nuts in the middle. Apple cores. Spicy melted caramel in the back.
Palate: smoky, sweet, melted caramel, and nutty toffee in the back. Caramel brittle. Starts out sticky then finishes dry which induces thirst for more, thirst I am happy to oblige. Caramel coated applewood smoked bacon brittle delights. Orange oils. Charred oak in my breath. Honeycomb.
Final Thoughts: magnificence in a glass. Aecht Schlenkerla never disappoints. Never. Like sours and Bretty beers, smoked (Rauche) beers are an acquired taste but once you fall in love, you fall in love forever.

500 ml bottle from Mile High Wine & Spirits fro $5.99. Reddish amber and clear appearance with a small tan head. Aroma of smoked malts, oak, light caramel, light nutty malts and light noble hops. Similar flavor, rich, moderately sweet and mildly bitter with a lingering smoked oak finish. Medium plus body with a smooth, creamy feel. A classic.

500 ml bottle from Woodman’s in Janesville, WI, served at cellar temp in a Unibroue glass. Hazy copper, medium diminishing head, faint lacing, a bit of white cap remains throughout...typically wonderful strong smoky Schlenkerla nose, smoked meat and cheese, caramel malts; there’s also a bit of a baked apple thing going on here...on the tongue it’s huge, massive malt character and to my taste a perfectly judged sweetness that doesn’t ever become cloying, with a drying toasty-smoky attitude that comes in strongly and quickly, and yes, some actual hops noticeable right at the end, which is bitter and toasty in perfect proportion, with just a tiny hint of sharp, alcoholic apple cider trying to reach up throughout but remaining quite nearly out of sight and palate; extraordinary...on the palate, full and warming with well captured natural-feeling carbonation. This doesn’t quite hit the heights of the Urbock for me (well, the Urbock of a decade ago; a re-visit is probably in order), but it’s still quite excellent in it’s own right and I’m loathe to knock it much for small flaws when it remains a superb example of the style.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2016 Tap. Pours clear Amber, small beige head, decent lacing. Aroma is mega smoke, bonfire, forest fire. Flavor is heavy smoke, light sweet, medium bitter, malty toffee undertones. Medium body. Kinda harsh on the finish, bitter and a bit acidic.
Earlier Rating: 6/11/2012 Total Score: 3.8
Bottle. Pours clear amber with a small off-white head that disappears almost immediately with little lacing. Aroma is heavily smoky, almost meaty, like a BBQ oak smoker in operation. Smokiness gradually fades after pour, revealing roasted malts and a bit of alcohol. Taste is a bit less smoky than the nose, but still dominated by roasted malts and smoke, with a warming, mildly bitter finish. Nice beer, if a bit watery.

Final score is an average of these rates.

Notes of smoked ham, burnt bread, wood, and oil with some faint brown sugar. Nice carbonated mouthfeel. Fun to try but really hard to drink a significant quantity of.

Not all Aecht Schlenkerla beers are smokey, but this was is. You can smell it from a foot away. The base is a sweet doppelbock. not a heavy, syrupy one, but a moderate one that balances out the smoke. Goes down very easily.

Trolleo (1385) - Pula / Zagreb, CROATIA - SEP 9, 2016
Clear dark coppery to brown body, no head. There might be lack of carbonation caused by drinking it month after expiration date. Lovely bacony aroma, dried meat. Taste is mild chocolate, bit of caramel, lots of smoke, sausages and bacon. Full bodied, creamy and oily, flat carbonation. Long sweet smoked finish. Great brew. //bottle from Pivoteka
