COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). Served / Sold: - Only during lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter - Only from the wooden keg at the Schlenkerla Data: Original Gravity: 14.5% Alcohol: 5.5% EBU: 32

A dark brown, slighty red, a head is medium and blond. Aroma is smokey but it’s balanced and quite dry, some tar liquirice candies, low sweetness, enjoyable. Taste has smoke, malts, only hint of tar liquirice candies, some bitterness in the end. Medium bodied, quite smooth carbonation. Not intensive as Urbock but this has it’s own strenghts. Lighter and dryer, surprisingly fresh and drinkable. Tastefull smoke is dominating.

Poured form bottle into lager glass a nice bottle brown with plenty of off white head and lace. Aroma is of a pork smokehouse but a little more subdued compared to the Marzen. Smoke and bacon are the notes here in the aroma and the taste. Creamy but outdoors like sitting next to a campfire. I like this one a little better than the fantastic Marzen most likely because it’s a little more subduded. Also reminds me of Chinese Lapsang Souhong tea, which is smoked over fire to dry. Wonderful.

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2016 Chestnut-colored with little light passing through. The nose is a fascinating interplay of starch and smoke: bacon, roasted green peas, crispy noodle snack, BBQ pork skins, some cereal, roasted barley, and beechwood. There’s a beautiful malty, caramely sweetness throughout keeping the smokiness in check. Beautiful and appetizing. The mouthfeel is silky, with a medium-to-thin body. The CO2 is subtle, but grows much in vigor if you push it. The taste is woody, smoky bitter with an umami edge and more than nominal sweetness. Lovely, top-notch.

Vielen Dank an Erzengel für dieses Bier! Klare orangebraune Farbe, ordentliche beige Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr rauchig, holzig, Schinken. Geschmack röstmalzig, süß rauchig, Schinken, etwas Holz, Karamell, sehr köstlich.

Bottle. An almost clear one, brown in color, with a dense, light beige head on top. The aroma is pleasantly smoked, ham-like, with dark caramel, some dried fruits and with a fruity touch. Piney hints in the far back. It’s very soft on the palate, full-bodied and semi-dry. Ham, smoke, caramel and dried fruits in the flavor, with a faint touch of bitterness. Not unbalanced or sweetish in any way. Lasting finish with the bitterness more evident. Sure a nice one, easy drinkable, tasteful and very soft on the palate. Went very well with the lunch we had. Would sure like more of this. 150228

Many thanks to Gabriel and John!!! Pours a clear dark cola cool with a rich, light tan head. The smell is heavy bacon, smoked and roasted malt, some malt sweetness. The taste is caramel, roast, smoke ending dry with some fruit. The body is light with fine beautiful carbonation.

500ml bottle [avowedly two, therefrom the first for "l’art pour l’art", flippant, pure enjoyment]. Clear, deep copper colour with late awakening, average, thick, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, superbly lacing, off-white to beige head. Well-known, world-famous, Schlenkerla smoke aroma, this time without sweet-ish touch, smoked trout, lentil soup/stew (Linseneintopf), ham (Schwarzwälder Schinken), campfire, beechwood ashes, etc. pp. Taste is dry, smoked malty, herbal, somehow the Linseneintopf (selbstverständlich mit Speck- und Wursteinlage)-association accumulates to a fixed idea (without claiming Linseneintopf to be a typical Bavarian "Brotzeit", but it is definitely included, accepted); add any of your personal, IDIOSYNCRATIC associations concerning smoke, all of them will prove to be true. Soft, minimally sticky palate, excellent carbonation. All the stops pulled out, perfect harmonious interaction. Terrific!
