The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). On tap at Rustico - Alexandria. Served in a stange. Pours a moderate brown color with some copper highlights. Off-white head forms at a few fingers and lingers for a bit before falling into a thin cap. A bit of lacing. The nose carries a light amount of oak as well as what is reminiscent of oak. Light malt with a bit of toast. Smoke is not overwhelming. Smoke hits the palate really well in the flavor--not overpowering, but definitely the dominant character. Light woody and earthy characteristics and a bit of toasted malt. The mouthfeel is really nice--a bit of smoke as well as an almost-creamy texture. Really, really well done. From a cask at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL, on 5/5/11. Aroma:There’s just smoke in the aroma, with maybe a little malt hiding. Appearance:Deep amber with very nice white head. Head has tiny bubbles and is long lasting. Moderate lasting. Taste:On the foretaste, there is a little smokey flavor with a great malt sweetness, but in the midtaste it changes to a much more mature smokey deeper smokey flavor. On the aftertaste there’s a small alcohol bite and a great nutty malt flavor. Palate:Light to medium mouthfeel with low to moderate carbonation. Overall:This is a wonderfully balanced rauchbeer with a lot of complexity.

Wooden cask at Churchkey. Pours somewhat clear amber/brown with a medium, creamy off-white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel), light hops (spicy) with light fruity esters and huge smoke notes. Flavor is is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel), light hops (spicy) with light fruity esters and huge smoke notes and bacon/meat. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation with a sweet finish.

Churchkey, DC cask 14oz ($8): Pours a brownish color, with not as much head, because of the cask pour. Aroma is of meat and smoke and malts and some hops. Not as much smoke as the more intense rauchs that this brewery comes out with (right before this I had some sips of Eiche, which is way smokier). However, this is definitely smokier than the helles. In any case, it a balanced smokiness. Upon tasting, the most surprising thing is the hops, which are way more plentiful than you would expect at first. Extremely well-balanced and manages to be a rauchbier without just being about the rauch. I could drink six-packs of this if they were around. Grand stuff.

Dark brown with off-white foam and aromas of - yes, smoke that overwhelms everything else! The taste is round and gentle, semi-sweet with lots of caramel, campfires and a slight bitterness. Very well balanced in the mouth, but according to my palate it gets a little monotonous after the first 25 cl has slid down.

Keg at the Rake a couple of times recently. Amber with a small flat head. No mistaking the brewer with all the familiar house characteristics. I bet that it is awesome fresh from the wood in Bamberg, as Jan and Charlotte confirmed having been there for its brief annual appearance a couple of weeks ago.

A Mes rate. Draught at the Rake.
I’ve wanted this for years. How amazed am I to find it in the Rake. I won’t bore you with the details. Schlenkerla. Smoke. Awesome. A little lighter and more drinkable maybe. Who gives a shit really. Amazing beer from a great brewery.

Feinrauchiger und angenehm malziger Antrunk. Die Rauchnoten verharren fast die ganze Zeit auf ihrem Anfangsniveau, das Malz und besonders der Hopfen steigern sich deutlich, um am Ende dann doch noch durch die Rauchigkeit eingeholt zu werden. Zum Ende leider recht trocken. Dunkel malzig, erdig getreidig. Sehr bitteres Finish, vorher kurz schokoladenmalzig. 12/11/11/12//12

Dark cloudy amber with a small head. Big smokey aroma, quite sweet. The flavour is smokey, with caramel malt, wood and a rising fruity flavour that is strong on the finish. The firm body excellently complements the robust smokiness.

Growler filled at Bierkraft. Looks pretty clear to me. Medium dark brown with some orange highlights and a 1 1/2 finger beige head, fair retention. Smoky wood and smoked dry meat aroma dominates, but doesn’t seem as beat-you-over-the-head as the Urbock. Also getting some toasted malt. Flavor is still fairly smoky, but there is the addition of some lager yeast notes. Some toasty malt followed by a bit of sweet grain follows through to a dry, earthy finish, bitterness peaking at a 2-3. Soft light carbonation with a light to medium body. Damn solid. I’d even imagine someone that doesn’t hate rauchbiers could find this quite appealing. I could drink a lot of this.
