COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). Served / Sold: - Only during lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter - Only from the wooden keg at the Schlenkerla Data: Original Gravity: 14.5% Alcohol: 5.5% EBU: 32

UPDATED: JUL 3, 2008 F-me. Hand-bottled. A bit of a hiss as I sprang the pop-top. Superb sign. Poured with a bold, thick head. I’ve been waiting too long to try this. Rich amber color. Rocky white head has decided to hang around. Initial whiff is big with big woodsy aromas. I can smell the glowing embers of a slightly extinguished fire, bacon crisping in a cast-iron skillet. My mouth waters for this smoky sensation. Slightly oily on the palate yet smooth and quenching. Still tingling with hints of carbonation. Underpinning of sweetness with passionate snips of bittering hops. As with too few things in life, this has been well worth the wait. Many thanks to redlight!

On tap at Three Floyds Brewpub and served in a 1/2 litre Schlenkerla glass. This beer poured a cloudy mahogany with a two-finger thick head of slowly fading tan foam. Some nice lacing was left around the glass. The aroma of the beer was made up of campfire and smoked breakfast ham. Not overpowering, but very inticing. The flavor followed suit with heavy smoke, bacon and ham notes, but not in an overdone fasion. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and super smooth. A heavily smoked brew that remains highly sessionable. Top notch!

Draft - These beers are unbelievable. This has a much more subdued smoke aroma and flavor than the other Schlenkerla beers. It really draws out more of the malt and sweet charachter in the beer, Truly excellent.

Name: Fastenbier
Date: March 16, 2008
Mode: Draft, Nitro
Source: Brick Store Pub
Appearance: hazy burnt orange, fine beige head, scattered lace
Aroma: huge smokey wood aroma like a slab of hickory smoked bacon
Body: creamy body
Flavor: dry dark caramel malt flavor, layers and layers of smoke, lots of earthyness with the smoke keeps it very dry, very woody, touch of dark caramel sweetness tries to break through but can’t find its way through the smoke, by the third glass you become saturated with the smoke and the caramel sweetness blooms and provides the perfect balance to the smoked earth

(3/17/08) Draught at De Wildeman in Amsterdam. Deep amber with a small and stable off-white head. Aroma of smoked meat. Very smoked sweetish flavor with sausage (salami and kabanos mostly) and malt. A dry, rather hoppy, finish. Medium-bodied. Really good and quite refreshing. I really hope to have it again some day.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2013 Cask (gravity) @ Schlenkerla, 96049 Bamberg, Germany. Unclear light to medium amber brown color with a large, frothy - creamy, excellent lacing, fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, wood, moderate smoke. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet bitter with a long duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily - creamy, carbonation is soft - flat. At last i manage to taste this beer, I was so excited. It is so nice and smooth and easy to drink. Delicious beer... the smoke is very well balanced. We was sitting in the Old Original room and did get more than 5 mugs of this fantastic beer, so nice ;o)) (200308)

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2010 Hand-bottled from a cask... GIABMISGFAB... My sample came from a hand bottling that was about two weeks old. It was poured too cold, but I let it stand a good while before checking it out. Once warm, it was a clear amber lager with orange highlights and a tiny, big bubbled head. The aroma was of subtle smoke and wood. I picked up no oxidation; a good sign. Medium-bodied and watery with low carbonation - this was expected as it was originally served on cask with no forced carbonation and then sat for a spell in the flip top. Well-bittered, woodsy flavor. Low sweetness with restrained smoke. Finishes smoky with a bitter hop bite. I wasn’t disappointed and I may never have the opportunity to try this one fresh, but I’ll be very grateful if I do. Cheers to redlight for bottling this one for mgumby10 and I!

Clear caramel brown color, a thick white head, and sticky lace. Not too heavy on the smoke in the aroma but it’s noticeable along with a sweet raisin and caramel note. Flavor has smoke, bacon, mesquite, toffee in the middle, slight bitterness in the finish, and a lingering smoke in the aftertaste. Medium thin body is crisp. Very nice.

On tap at Three Floyds. Damn this stuff was smokey and awesome. Pours a nice clear bright orangey woody brown with a massive lasting white head. Aroma is very smokey, yet, clean and refined- huge in smoked meats some light salmon, and constrained campfire- heavy on the smooth woody cold beechwood smokiness with some moderate sweet caramell nuttiness. Immense nutty toasty smokiness, tons of bacon, and smoked brisket and a drying smooht as hell finish. I was hungover as shit when I had this, but it still tasted fanstastic and I swore I felt 100 times better after I drank this.

Draught at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL. I was excited to be able to try this and was not let down. Red-brown amber body with a creamy lacing light tan head. Spicy aroma of german hops and hickory smoke. Flavor is malt with a complimentary smoke. Very tasty and quaffable.
