The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). On tap at Church Key DC: Transparent deep mahogany pour with ruby hues and a large, frothy, stringy-lacing off-white head. Has a huge smoky nose with some peppery notes and doughy malt. Starts with rich dark toasty caramel malty sweetness and great complex smoky flavor before a smooth slightly more bitter and dry finish. A very enjoyable and true to style rauchbier.

Medium beige head. Barely translucent hazy dark red body. Smoky bacon aroma with oily notes. Dry-sweetish roasty caramel taste with smoky licorice notes. Mild, rounded mouthfeel. Mid-to-full body. Dry chalky wooden resiny aftertaste with burnt smoky notes. Very nice, and highly drinkable. (0.4l draft at Bishops Arms, Folkungagatan, Stockholm.)

Pint at the Bavarian Lodge. Pours a dark brown red with thick lacing and a firm white head. The classic Schlenkerla smoked bouquet is here with defined, clean, mouthwatering bacon, wood smoke, and campfire. I can’t get over the remarkable clarity and balance. The flavor is strongly smoky with the same unbeatable smoked quality only Schlenkerla can provide. Perhaps this is less intense than their marzen, but that isn’t really saying much. Nonetheless, the meaty bacon and campfire flavor is still in full effect. The palate is light and clean with a lasting finish of smoke that tries to fade to a mildly sweet malt hint. Excellent.

Pint glass at the Local Option. How lucky am I to try this beer twice in a week? I’m equally as impressed as the first time I had it. The true, complex smoke is all over the place. I find this satisfyingly intense, but this is in comparison to most other weaker smoked beers. I’d love to do a side by side with their marzen and see which is the true victor.

Dark ruby color, steady off-white head, lace. Typical Bamberg smokey aroma, malty notes. Medium-bodied, lighter than in eg. Märzen. Smoked ham flavor with semi-crisp carbonation. Slick, smokey aftertaste. Super session smoke beer.

Tap at ølbaren. Dark brown with a hazy look. Poored almost like a slowbeer, so the head was extremly dense and long lasting while the beer turned out a little undercarbonated. Classic Schlenkerla smoke aroma which just doesnt go wrong. Nutty malty flavors with lots of smoke ofcourse. Great!

Well I have a way to go with these smoked beers. I have a hard time getting past the ham and bacon aromas and flavors to enjoy them. Maybe with some time I will grow to appreciate them...probably not. For the style, I can tell it is brewed very well.. hence a pretty good score.
