Smells and tastes like bacon, which is impressive, but not enjoyable for me. Itís really smoke all over, too much for me.

Location/Date:Draft at Smoke & Barrel on August 14th, 2012.
Appearance: Pours a dark cloudy brown.
Aroma: Aroma is of smoke and bacon.
Taste: Nice amount of medium bitterness, smoke, faint bacon.
Palate:Medium body, quick finish.
Summary: I know this was the highest active smoke beer on Ratebeer, but I never imagined Iíd like this so much. I donít even like real smoke, yet this was really really tasty. Would love to have again.

On tap at Milltown a while back. Nice job getting this gem in, Ethan! Terrific velvety dark copper beer, with a massive silky head. Nose is straight bacon, son! Taste is, while still powerfully rauchy, even more complex, with modest notes of fruit, yeast, and caramel giving shape to the smoke and in turn being held together by that common, intense ingredient. A real treat, loved it.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On draft at Monkís Cafe in Philadelphia.
A: Cloudy, reddish orange hues. Small to medium head with little lacing.
S: This is where all Aecht Schlenkerla beers excel. This beer smells like a beautiful late summer campfire. Charred meat, heavy smoke, summer sausage, and burnt malt.
T: The taste falls directly in line with the aroma. This isnít necessarily a complex brew, but it has amazing, unique flavors that make this beer a must try. It has similarities to a fine Islay scotch, like Lagavulin. Itís like drinking in a campfire. Really tasty, and pairs very well with strong cheeses and meat.
M: Thin feel, moderately low carbonation.
D: Itís really easy to drink this beer. However, one is plenty for me, as the smokiness, while done expertly, and mouthfeel lower the rate of consumption.

On tap at zly Casy in Prague. A reddish shade of brown with a lasting off-white head; aroma with a good whiff of peaty smoke and burnt grass; curious hazelnut liqueur sweetness with a firm but light texture, the smoke quality is mild but intriguing. No surprises that itís a delicious schlenkerla

On tap at Zly casy. Dark unclear brown color. Aroma is smoked meat and taste is even more smoked meat. :) Iíve had quite a few smoked beers recently, but nothing comes even close to Schlenkerla Fastenbier. This is the prototype of smoked beer for me.

On tap at Brasserie V - Pours mahogany with a thin tan head. Nose is the smoky, meaty malt Iím looking for, but dialed back just a bit. Not sweet, which is nice. Bready, lightly toasted malt comes through as well. Bready, lightly yeasty, with a nice mellow smoke and a sweetness that isnít overbearing. Really smooth, with velvety carbonation. Unbelievable.

Draught at Of Love and Regret (very cool new Baltimore bistro bar). Very dark amber color. Smoky-salty aroma. Very heavy, frothy lacing and nice body. Smoky and malty, and a teeny bit of soapy taste. Long term quite peaty... great for serious scotch lovers like my wifey (says it?s just about perfect!).
